Delhi Women's Commission Asks Police To File FIR Against Those Abusing Shubman Gill's Sister

Shahneel Gill was abused on social media after Shubman Gill scored a century against RCB and won the match for his side, thereby knocking Virat Kohli's team out of the playoffs.

Taking suo-moto cognisance of social media posts abusing the sister of cricketer Shubman Gill, the Delhi Commission for Women on Wednesday issued a notice to Delhi Police and sought registration of an FIR. The DCW also asked Delhi Police to submit a detailed action taken report by May 26.

Gill's sister Shahneel Gill was abused and trolled on social media after the Gujarat Titans batsman scored an unbeaten century against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy in Bangalore on Sunday to knock Virat Kohli's team out of the playoffs.

Gill played a brilliant innings of 104 not out off 52 balls, including five fours and eight sixes. The Titans' victory meant that Mumbai Indians made it to the playoffs as the fourth team and RCB finished sixth.

Shahneel is popular on Instagram, with about 1.10 lakh followers. Since Sunday, she has been the target of several abusive remarks, particularly regarding her Instagram post following the match. Some users also hit out at Shubman Gill for ending RCB's campaign in the IPL.

"What a wholesome day," Gill's sister Shahneel wrote on Insta while sharing a few pictures from the match.

On Monday, DCW chief Swati Maliwal hit back at those trolling Gill's sister on social media. She said action would be taken against those abusing the Indian batsman's sister.

"Extremely shameful to see trollers abusing #ShubhmanGill's sister just because the team they follow lost a match. Previously we had initiated action against people abusing #ViratKohli's daughter. DCW will take action against all those who have abused Gill's sister as well. This shall not be tolerated!" Maliwal said in a tweet.

However, several users also tweeted in support of Gill and his sister.

"Look at the tweets today for Shubman Gill and his sister. Man this is why I hated when Kohli-Anushka pardoned that 'IIT graduate' who gave a rape threat to Vamika. Some of these guys need to be behind bars and careers ruined. He should have been made an example to stop all this," a user wrote.
