RG Kar Case: Victim's Family Reaches SC Over Dissatisfaction With CBI Probe, Petition To Be Heard On Jan 29
The application was presented before a bench headed by the Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna today. It has been scheduled for hearing for next Wednesday.

The family of the RG Kar rape and murder case victim have filed a petition before the Supreme Court expressing dissatisfaction with the CBI investigation. The Supreme Court will hear the matter on Wednesday, January 29.
The application was presented before a bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna on Wednesday, January 22, following which it was decided in the presence of lawyers from all parties that the matter will be heard next Wednesday.
This comes after the Sealdah court on Monday sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till natural death in the rape and murder of the post-graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. He was declared guilty by the court on Saturday under Sections 66 (rape), 64 (causing injury resulting in death) and 103 (1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Kolkata court also ordered the state government to give a compensation of ₹17 lakh to the victim’s family.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday stated that it would hear the CBI, the victim's family, and the convict before deciding on whether an appeal by the West Bengal government would be admitted or not. The matter will be heard on January 27.
The Bengal government has claimed that the trial court gave inadequate punishment to the convict in the RG Kar case. The CBI has opposed the state's right to file an appeal in the matter, stating that since the case was investigated by a central agency, the state government does not have the jurisdiction to file an appeal in the matter.
Advocate General Kishore Dutta, appearing for the state seeking capital punishment for Roy, stated before the court that the life sentence to the convict till the end of his natural life was inadequate. He claimed that apart from the prosecuting agency, the family of the victim and the convict can also challenge the punishment.
Deputy Solicitor General Rajdeep Majumdar, who appeared for the CBI, opposed the state's submission, maintaining that it does not have the right to appeal the trial court order on the ground of inadequacy. He also submitted that the central agency had prayed before the trial court to award capital punishment to Roy.
