'Repealing Obsolete Criminal Laws, Make Police More Sensitive': PM Modi At DGP Conference

PM Modi advocated enhancing police officers' sensitivity and training them in developing technology. He emphasised the value of the National Data Governance Framework in easing data flow.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended the 57th All-India Conference of Director Generals/ Inspector Generals of Police in New Delhi.

According to a press release by Prime Minister's Office (PMO), PM Modi proposed increasing the sensitivity of police officers and training them in emerging technology. He emphasised the significance of the National Data Governance Framework in facilitating data flow among agencies.

PM Modi also recommended repealing obsolete criminal laws & building standards for police organisations across states along with prison reforms to improve jail management. He discussed strengthening border & coastal security by organising frequent visits of officials.

While we should continue to harness technical solutions such as biometrics, the Prime Minister advised that we should also reinforce traditional policing measures such as foot patrols. He advocated for the removal of outdated criminal laws and the establishment of national standards for police organisations across states, the statement said. 

He proposed prison reforms to improve jail administration. He also emphasised boosting border and coastline security through frequent official visits, as stated in the statement. 

As per the statement, PM Modi emphasised the importance of increased cooperation between state police and federal authorities in order to utilise capabilities and share best practises. He proposed recreating the DGsP/IGsP Conference model at the state/district levels for discussing new concerns and evolving best practises among their teams.

The prime minister concluded the conference by awarding police medals for distinguished service.

The conference focused on policing and national security issues such as counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and cyber security. The conference was also attended by the union home minister, ministers of state for home, national security advisor, union home secretary, DGsP/IGsP of States/UTs, and heads of Central Police Organizations/Central Armed Police Forces. Around 600 more officers of various levels from states/UTs virtually attended the conference, the statement said.
