Maharashtra Rain: 135 Dead, Over 1800 Shifted; CM Uddhav Thackeray Announces Compensation

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray visited the affected area and took stock of the devastation. The CM said that the people who have suffered losses due to floods will be given compensation.

Heavy rain in Maharashtra has disrupted the normal life of citizens and created havoc in several cities. So far 135 people have  reportedly lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the state due to heavy downpours. 

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray visited the affected area and took stock of the devastation. The CM, who reached the village of Taliye of Mahad in Raigad, said that the people who have suffered losses due to floods will be given compensation. He said that govt will try that no lives are lost in such incidents in the future.

Death toll rises to 47 in Raigad

NDRF teams are engaged in relief and rescue work in flood-hit Raigad. A team of NDRF recovered 11 bodies during the rescue operation in Ambeghar, Satara landslide incident. Satara district administration said that rescue operation still underway. 

"Our rescue operation started yesterday. We found bodies of 2 children aged between 7-8 years. Lower portion of the land is still filled with mud and we are digging up the area to create a path. This will help in the search operation," said Sanjeev Kumar, NDRF Sub Inspector, on landslides in Raigad. 

Meanwhile, NDRF teams have retrieved 52 bodies from various landslide sites in Maharashtra. The team has rescued 1,800 stranded people so far and evacuated 87 people to safer places in Maharashtra. Many more people are feared trapped under the debris. Extensive searches are on for missing people. 

53 thousand cusec liters of water was released from Koyna Dam. Due to this the risk of flood has increased in the surrounding villages.

The floods have caused extensive damage. Heaps of soil has accumulated on houses and roads. After the flood, a major challenge before the administration is how to provide drinking water, food and medicines to the affected people. A senior NDRF official said, “Many schools and some private properties were used as shelters and first aid centers for the injured.”
