Lok Sabha To Hold 16-Hour Discussion On Operation Sindoor Next Week, Rajya Sabha 9 Hours Amid Oppn Uproar—Report
The government has agreed to a 16-hour Lok Sabha discussion and 9-hour Rajya Sabha discussion on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam attack next week. The opposition demanded for an immediate debate on the matter and even disrupted the session with their protests.
The central government on Monday agreed to hold a 16-hour discussion on Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam terror attack in the Lok Sabha. The discussion is likely to be taken up next week, despite repeated demands from the opposition that the discussion be held this week itself. The matter will also be discussed in the Rajya Sabha for nine hours.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on Monday, but the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day amid opposition's noisy protests over demand of a discussion on Operation Sindoor. They also insisted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must reply on the matter during the discussion.
Meanwhile, government representatives noted at the Business Advisory Committee that PM Modi is scheduled to leave for a foreign visit this week and can only be present in the House for any discussion next week.
Lok Sabha Adjourned Amid Uproar On Op Sindoor Discussion
Opposition members protested that the government's agenda for this week did not mention their demand for a debate on the issue. Apart from PM Modi's presence, they have also demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh should also be present.
When the House reconvened at 4:00 PM after the third adjournment, the opposition continued to raise slogans demanding a discussion on Operation Sindoor, even as Dilip Saikia, who was in the Chair, urged to allow a bill on readjustment of Goa Assembly seats to be taken up.
When the opposition did not listen and continued its sloganeering, the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the fourth time on the first day.
Earlier, when the House met after the second adjournment, the Chair urged opposition members to stop sloganeering and allow the House to function. Sandhya Ray had then adjourned the proceedings till 4:00 PM. The House was adjourned over the same issues earlier in the day.
"The government is ready to discuss any topic the opposition wants. Whatever time they need to discuss, the government is ready to answer all questions," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured the opposition MPs.
Thereafter, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed to the opposition leaders to raise their demand during the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting at 2:30 PM today. "The government is ready to reply to all the issues that the Speaker agrees to at the BAC meeting. But to raise slogans and not let the House function on the first day of the Monsoon session is unacceptable," Rijiju said in the House.
When the opposition MPs continued their protest, Jagdambika Pal, who was in the Chair, requested them to leave the Well and return to their seats, assuring them that they will be allowed to raise all the matters they wanted to discuss.
"I will allow you to raise all issues after Question Hour. The House will function according to rules and regulations. I cannot allow sloganeering and raising of placards," Om Birla said.
Some of the opposition members also demanded a debate on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and the situation in Manipur.
