Kerala Mother Hands Over Drug-Addicted Son To Police After Years Of Failed Rehabilitation
The mother reportedly took the decision after her son threatened to harm her and other family members.

A woman from Elathur, Kerala, turned her 26-year-old son over to the police after he allegedly threatened to harm her and other family members. The mother, Mini, stated that despite multiple rehabilitation attempts, her son Rahul continued to struggle with drug addiction, leaving her with no option but to seek police intervention.
Rahul, who has been battling addiction since his teenage years, was taken into custody on Friday following a complaint from his mother. Mini revealed that his substance abuse began at the age of 13, though the family only recognized the severity of his addiction when he was in his late teens, as per a report on PTI. Over the years, repeated efforts to reform him through medical treatment and de-addiction programs failed as he continued to relapse.
"Rahul said he had been using drugs since he was 13 years old. But, we came to know about it only when he was 18 or 19 years old. We took him to doctors and de-addiction centres. Though there would be some change soon after the treatment, he would get the contrabands from somewhere and start using it again," Mini shared with local media. She recalled violent outbursts, including an incident where Rahul allegedly bit a child in the family for refusing to give him money for drugs.
'Habitual Offender'
Mini had previously filed a police complaint against her son but withdrew it after he pleaded for a second chance. However, this time, she remained resolute. "When he called me from jail crying, I believed him and helped him secure bail. But I won’t make the same mistake again," she said.
Rahul has a history of legal troubles, including charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, drug-related offenses, and theft. According to a senior police officer, he is a habitual offender with multiple cases registered against him across different stations in Kerala, as per the report. The police acted on a long-pending (LP) warrant against him after his mother’s report.
