Mumbai Studio Where Kunal Kamra, Samay Raina Hosted Shows Likely To Be Razed By BMC

The studio, famous for comedy shows, on Monday, announced that it will temporarily shut down after a controversy over Kunal Kamra's latest show.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is likely to raze the Habitat studio where comedian Kunal Kamra cracked jokes on Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde during a show. This is the same studio where comedian Samay Raina's 'India's Got Latent' was shot. BMC officials reached the venue on Monday.

The studio, famous for comedy shows, on Monday announced that it will temporarily shut down after a controversy over Kamra's latest show. The studio was ransacked by Shiv Sena workers late Sunday night.

In an Instagram post, the studio owners said they were shocked by the vandalism. "We are shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us. Artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices," it said in an official statement.

A group of Shiv Sena workers entered the studio premises in Khar and damaged property to protest against Kamra's remarks against Shinde. Visuals on social media showed Sena workers throwing chairs at the studio.

FIR Against Kunal Kamra

Kamra taunted Shinde using a modified version of a Hindi song from the film Dil To Pagal Hai. The police on Monday registered an FIR against Kamra, a comedian who has often courted controversies, for allegedly making defamatory remarks against Shinde during the show.

They also registered a case against nearly 40 Shiv Sena workers for allegedly vandalising the Khar-based venue, where Kamra's show with the "gaddaar" (traitor) jibe at Shinde was shot, as well as the hotel in whose premises the studio is located.

Amid criticism from Shiv Sena leaders, there were some who defended the comic and called out the vandalism by the party workers.

Rival Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut called Kamra's latest remarks "Kunal Ka Kamal". BJP MLA Ram Kadam said Kamra seems to be targeting Shinde on someone's instructions.  As he has crossed the limits, we will blacken his face wherever we spot him, Kadam said.
