IAF's Operation Safed Sagar During Kargil War
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to commemorate the victory of Operation Vijay in 1999 which marked the conclusion of Kargil between Indian and Pakistan, which began in May 1999.
Indian forces had successfully reclaimed strategic positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir during the war that had been infiltrated by Pakistani soldiers and terrorists.
The IAF had also launched Operation Safed Sagar during the conflict flying around 5000 strike missions, 350 reconnaissance/ ELINT missions, and around 800 escort flights. It also carried out 2000 helicopter sorties towards casualty evacuations and air transport operations.
On May 28, 1999, four officers of the 152 Helicopter Unit — Sqn Ldr R Pundir, Flt Lt S Muhilan, Sgt PVNR Prasad and Sgt RK Sahu — were tasked to fly as 'Nubra' formation for a live strike against enemy positions at Tololing.
However, after successfully carrying out the offensive, their helicopter was hit by an enemy Stinger Missile during the breakaway, killing all four IAF personnel.
They were awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), posthumously.
