Heavy Rainfall In Northeast, Heatwave In North India, Know IMD Weather Forecast For Coming Week

Weather This Week: Rainfall is expected in West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya, while heatwaves will continue in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana.

Weather This Week: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for the coming days, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya. This weather pattern is expected to persist over the next 4-5 days, as per. Additionally, a heat wave to severe heat wave conditions is likely to continue over many parts of northern India during the next 3-4 days before abating.

Significant rainfall has been observed in various regions such as Meghalaya where Mawsynram received 64 cm of rainfall, and Cherrapunji 51 cm, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim where Alipurduar recorded 21 cm. Other regions such as Konkan & Goa, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar also experienced heavy rainfall.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon currently passes through various locations, including Navsari, Jalgaon, Amravati, and Islampur. Conditions are favourable for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into additional parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Northwest Bay of Bengal, Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Bihar over the next 4-5 days, the IMD informed.

 As per the release, several cyclonic circulations are influencing the weather as Northeast Assam and North Bangladesh are experiencing cyclonic circulations. An east-west trough runs from northwest Bihar to east Assam.

Strong southwesterly and southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal are affecting the northeastern states, causing widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over the next seven days.

Rainfall Forecast In Northeast

 Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura in the next five days. 

Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim today, and over Meghalaya from June 15th to 19th, and Assam from June 17 to 19th.

Scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is predicted over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha in the next four days.

The IMD cautioned of localised flooding of roads and waterlogging in low-lying areas due to heavy rainfall in the northeastern states and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim. Traffic disruptions in major cities due to waterlogged roads, Damage to infrastructure including minor damage to roads and vulnerable structures, and Landslides and mudslides in hilly areas were also suspected.

 Heat Wave Conditions In North India

In the past 24 hours, severe heat wave conditions prevailed in most parts of East Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Uttarakhand, with isolated pockets experiencing extreme temperatures in Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and north Odisha. Maximum temperatures ranged between 44-46°C, with Prayagraj in East Uttar Pradesh recording the highest at 46.9°C, as per the IMD.

Severe heat wave conditions are expected to persist in many parts of Uttar Pradesh until June 18, in parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi until June 17, and in isolated pockets of Bihar and Jharkhand until June 16.

Warm night conditions are forecasted for Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi until June 17, and Uttar Pradesh and Northeast Madhya Pradesh until June 16.

For those in heatwave-affected areas, precautions include avoiding heat exposure and staying hydrated with ORS and homemade drinks like lassi, lemon water, and buttermilk. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, cotton clothes, and use a cloth, hat, or umbrella to cover the head.
