Delhi Sexual Assault Case: 7 Women Held After 20-Yr-Old Paraded Through Streets In Kasturba Nagar

Delhi Rape Survivor Case: Seven women from one family, were arrested by Delhi police after a woman was allegedly assaulted and later paraded with her face blackened and head tonsured in Delhi's Kasturba Nagar area.

New Delhi: In an incident that shook the national capital, Delhi Police has arrested seven women and two minors after a 20-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted and paraded in east Delhi's Kasturba Nagar.

While taking an action on the incident, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Shahdara R Sathiyasundaram said, "Seven women arrested & two minors apprehended, so far".

The woman was gang-raped, tonsured, garlanded with slippers, and paraded with a blackened face in the Kasturba Nagar area in the national capital.

Earlier, Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Thursday issued a notice to the Delhi Police, seeking immediate arrest of all those involved in the “abduction, gang rape and disgracing” of woman.

After meeting the survivor, Maliwal told that the victim had been abducted from her home and gang-raped by three men involved in the illicit liquor trade and drug smuggling. The survivor said that while they were gang-raping her, a few other women were present there and were encouraging the men to torture her even more.

"The girl was brutally gang-raped by criminals and has severe bruises all over her body. She is in deep trauma. All the culprits, including the women who instigated the gang rape, must be arrested. Further, the survivor and her family need to be given protection,” said Maliwal.

“Delhi Police must also take steps to crack down on the sale of illegal liquor and peddling of drugs in the capital as the criminals involved in these acts have become bold and need to be taught a lesson,” she added.

Kejriwal urges Centre, LG to initiate strict action.

While condemning the attack on the woman, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said it was shameful.

"How did the criminals get so much courage? I request the Union Home Minister and the LG to direct police to take strict action and pay attention to the law and order situation. Delhiites won't tolerate such heinous crimes and criminals at any cost," he tweeted in Hindi.

The incident took place earlier in the day. Police have said that the incident is a result of personal enmity.

The victim was at her husband's home in Anand Vihar when the accused who resided close to her mom's place in Kasturba Nagar abducted her. Preliminary examinations show the lady and a boy belonging to the family of the accused were friends.

"The boy committed suicide in November last year and his family is now blaming the victim. They have alleged that it was because of her he took the extreme step. To extract revenge from her, they allegedly abducted her. They wanted to teach her a lesson," a senior police officer told news agency PTI.

The Police have denied allegations of gang rape but said the woman was sexually assaulted by her acquaintances who are also her neighbours.
