Delhi: Jamia Student Shot At Inside Holy Family Hospital After Fight Between Two Groups

A 26-year-old student named Noman Chaudhary was shot at in the Holy Family Hospital upon his visit to the hospital for treatment after he sustained a blunt injury on his head

New Delhi: A Jamia Millia Islamia student was shot at by another student inside the Holy Family Hospital in southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar area Thursday evening. The information was received regarding a quarrel at Jamia Millia Islamia university library around 8.50 pm, the police said, reported news agency PTI.

The initial investigation revealed that a fight had ensued between two groups of students, according to the senior police officer. It is when a 26-year-old student named Noman Chaudhary, a resident of Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh, sustained a blunt injury on his head and visited the Holy Family Hospital for treatment, said the officer.

Another student, who is an associate of Nauman Chaudhary called Nauman Ali also visited the hospital to see his friend, the police added. Then, a student of the second group, Zalal, a resident of Mewat in Haryana came to the hospital along with his friends and fired at Nauman Ali outside the emergency ward, the officer said.

Nauman Ali had a superficial injury on the scalp. The injured had been shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. The crime team is inspecting the scene of the crime. Legal action has been initiated accordingly at Jamia Nagar and New Friends Colony police stations, the officer added.

A video of the attack has gone viral on social media in which the purported clipping shows the students running in the hospital vicinity during the incident.

“There was a clash between two groups in the locality, and some injured persons were brought to the hospital Emergency. One shot was fired in the Emergency between the clashing groups. No bystanders, other patients or hospital staff were injured. The situation was immediately brought under control,” said the hospital in a statement as quoted by Money Control.

On Monday, Jamia Millia Islamia had asked its students and teachers not to assemble in and around the campus as police have imposed restrictions under section 144 of the CrPC in the entire Okhla area, reported news agency PTI.

In a notice issued, the chief proctor of the university said the SHO of the Jamia Nagar police station has informed that the restrictions have been imposed since September 19 as information was received that some people or groups may indulge in activities prejudicial to the maintenance of peace.
