Jailed MP Amritpal Singh Wants To Participate In Republic Day Celebrations & Parliament Session, Moves HC
MP Amritpal Singh, detained under the National Security Act, has filed a petition seeking release to attend Parliament sessions and the Republic Day ceremony.

MP Amritpal Singh, currently under Preventive Detention under the National Security Act, has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions to the Union Government to release him and allow him to attend the Republic Day ceremony on January 26 and participate in Parliament sessions.
A Member of Parliament loses their membership if remain absent from parliamentary sitting continuously for 60 days. According to the petition filed by Singh, he has been absent for a total of 46 days, reported Live Law.
"Today we have filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on behalf of Amritpal. He received a letter to participate in the Lok Sabha proceedings and for this, he has written a letter to the District Magistrate Amritsar seeking permission, but there was no response on it," said Singh's lawyer, Hakam Singh, reported ANI.
"We have filed a petition to allow him to raise the issues of Khadoor Sahib in the Lok Sabha. We hope that it will be heard by Monday," he added.
In his plea, the Independent MP from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency stated that he had sent a formal request to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha on November 30 seeking permission to attend the ongoing parliamentary session.
He had also submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner requesting to attend the parliamentary session but did not receive any response to date.
The plea stated that Amritpal, in his capacity as a Member of Parliament, is obligated to attend parliamentary sessions and participate in legislative debates to effectively put forth the concerns of his constituents.
His plea has been backed by Shiromani Akali Dal. SAD leader Daljeet Singh Cheema said that when Amritpal Singh has been elected MP, he should be allowed to participate in the parliament session also.
A pro-Khalistani, Amritpal Singh won the Lok Sabha elections 2024 from Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency as an Independent candidate. He was arrested after a month-long chase on April 23, 2023, and has been in Assam's Dibrugarh jail since then.
