Budget 2025: FM Sitharaman Carries Red Bahi-Khata Pouch, Know The Significance Of Red Colour In Sanatan Dharma

The Union Budget will be presented on February 1, as every year. The budget is linked to the red Bahi Khata pouch carried by FM Sitharaman. What is the significance of red in Sanatan Dharma?

Budget 2025: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on February 1, 2025. As the Budget date approaches, one of the most talked-about aspects is the red pouch that holds the complete financial document. This red-coloured pouch, also known as the Bai-Khata, replaced the traditional briefcase in 2019, symbolising a shift from colonial-era practices to Indian traditions. Sitharaman carries her iPad in this pouch, from which she reads out the Budget speech, embracing technology while maintaining tradition. But why is this pouch always red? In Hinduism, the colour red is symbolic and holds deep spiritual and cultural significance, representing prosperity, energy, and auspiciousness. Let’s explore its meaning and why it is associated with the Budget.

What Is A Bahi-Khata?

In 2019, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, India’s first full-time female finance minister, made a notable departure from tradition by replacing the iconic Budget briefcase with a Bahi-Khata. She uses a red cloth folder emblazoned with the national emblem to carry Budget documents. She swapped traditional papers with a digital tablet for carrying her speech and other Budget documents.

A Bahi-Khata is a traditional Indian ledger that's used to maintain financial records and accounts. The term originates from the Hindu words 'bahi' meaning 'book' and 'khata' meaning 'account'. Traditionally, these ledgers featured handwritten entries in a structured format which ensured financial accountability.

Significance Of Red Colour In Sanatan Dharma

  • In Hinduism, along with rituals, traditions, and lifestyle, colours are also considered significant. Among them, the colour red holds special importance.
  • In religious scriptures, the colour red is considered the favourite of Goddess Durga, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Lakshmi.
  • The red tilak applied on auspicious occasions symbolises bravery and victory.
  • Whether it’s placing a cloth under the idol during prayers or using sindoor or other significant colours for auspicious events, the colour red is used extensively in all such practices.
  • This colour brings happiness in future life. The bride wears a red outfit during the wedding, which is also referred to as the colour of marital bliss.

Why Is The Colour Red Used In The Budget?

The use of red colour in the budget presentation holds deep significance. By presenting the budget in red, the government sends a message of power, strength, and stability to the public. Red is considered a powerful colour, symbolising energy, strength, and authority. It is associated with the sun, fire, and life. In many cultures, it is a symbol of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune.
