Onam Image Of 'Kerala Railway Station' Is Fake, DRM Thiruvananthapuram Says It Is Edited
The DRM of Thiruvananthpuram has warned netizens not to fall for a fake image that is being passed off as a railway station from Kerala with the claim that it was decked up for Onam.
An image of a railway station being decked up for a special occasion has caught the fancy of netizens and is being widely shared. The caption accompanying the photo claims that it's a railway station in Kerala and has been decorated for Onam. "This is a picture of a railway station in Kerala specially decorated for Onam. The flowers near the tracks are real and have been planted specially for the occasion. Onam is being celebrated from the 20th August to 2nd September at God's Own Country," the caption reads.
However, the Divisional Railway Manager of Thiruvananthpuram, has dismissed the image as "fake". "Fake news alert! An edited picture of a colourful train is circulating in social media with a claim that is from a railway station in Kerala. The claim is false. The train in the image is from Kyoto, Japan. Do not fall for fake news," the DRM warned in an X (formerly Twitter) post. Kerala is celebrating Onam, a harvest festival that is celebrated for 10 days, from August 20 to 29.
A closer inspection of the photo by multiple fact-check websites revealed that it was indeed a fake claim. The photo was actually generated on the Artificial Intelligence website, Midjourney and a watermark — 'Copper & Black' — can be seen in the photo.
News website India Today's fact check team got in touch with the owner of Copper&Black advertising agency in the UAE, Aneesh Chakkottil, who said that it was an AI-generated photo. "To clear up any misunderstandings, I added the watermark ‘Copper & Black’, the name of my advertising agency, to the image. Just my mind created this picture. Because I wished to view it that way, I generated this image," he was quoted as saying by India Today.
