Forceps Left Inside Woman's Stomach During C-Section In 2017 Due To Medical Negligence: Kerala Police

The police said that they have completed the investigation and had given a report to DMO to form a medical board to conduct an investigation.

Kerala police recently found out that alleged medical negligence of Kozhikode government hospital doctors led to forceps being left inside the stomach of a woman after her cesarean delivery. Based on the complaint last year, the police started an investigation after developing multiple health complications after undergoing a c-section in 2017.

According to PTI, a senior police officer said, "The investigation has confirmed that the forceps were accidentally left inside the woman's body after the cesarean section, which was an alleged act of negligence by the doctors."

The police said that they have completed the investigation and had given a report to DMO to form a medical board to conduct an investigation.

In October last year, Harshinia (30) from Kozhikode gave a complaint demanding an inquiry into the surgery.

In November 2017, Harshinia underwent a third cesarean at Kozhikode  Medical College. She earlier underwent two C-sections at two different private hospitals.

In September last year, Harshini developed severe pain. Later, the doctors of Kozhikode medical college conducted surgery to remove mosquito artery forceps which was in her stomach for the past five years.

The mosquito artery forceps is a scissor-like piece of equipment used by surgeons to clamp bleeding vessels during surgeries.

Officials from the medical college had at first denied any malpractice and pointed to her prior cesarean deliveries in private facilities. However, in response to the police's findings, the authorities have established a medical board to do a probe.

For the past two months, the woman has been protesting against the administrators of the medical institution in an effort to get justice for the crime.

Harshini expressed contentment over police investigation since the cops validated her claims of negligence.

After the revelation, the government announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh.
