Karnataka: Right-Wing Outfits In Kolar Allege Conversion Bid By Christian Missionaries, Burn Religious Books

The incident in Kolar took place just as Karnataka Assembly's winter session has started on Monday.

Chennai: Tension prevailed in Srinivasapura town in the Kolar district of Karnataka after Right-Wing groups stopped Christian missionaries from distributing religious books and claimed that they were involved in a religious conversion bid. The Right-Wing activists also burnt the books and pamphlets creating tension in the region on Sunday.

The residents gathered at the spot and joined with Right-Wing forces to prevent any conversion bid in the future, reports IANS. They also threatened to stage protests if such activities continue.

The police said that Christian missionaries were distributing their religious books to people in Srinivasapura on Saturday and as per the residents the missionaries who came from Chintamani took the effort to convert the people through religious conversion acts.  

Following this, the Right-Wing groups started opposing the move and handed over the four people to the police.

The police have registered a case and are probing the incident.

The incident in Kolar took place just as Karnataka Assembly's winter session has started on Monday.

The BJP-led government has also decided to table a law against forceful religious conversions in the state. The bill is expected to create a stormy scene in the Assembly.

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai on the bill said that the government will table the anticonversion bill in the winter session at Belagavi and the bill is meant to curb religious conversions through inducements. However, the CM has also assured the Christians of protection from prayers.
