Karnataka Farmer Attempts To Kill Self Before Central Drought Assessment Team

The Central inter-ministerial team was visiting agricultural fields in Belagavi when suddenly a farmer who came to meet the officers tried to drink pesticide.

As the Central inter-ministerial team is currently in Karnataka to review the drought situation in the state, a farmer in Belagavi district attempted suicide during their visit on Friday. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met the interministerial committee to explain the drought scenario in the state. Over 195 taluks have been designated as drought-prone. According to a report on IANS, the team was visiting agricultural fields in Belagavi when suddenly a farmer who came to meet the officers tried to drink pesticide and attempted suicide. 

The police who were around immediately tried to snatch the bottle from him. 

The farmer identified as Appasaheb Lakkundi said the drought completely destroyed the crop he had sowed on 40 acres of land. As a result, he said that he was compelled to take the extreme decision. 

He also accused the officials of visiting them but not doing anything solid after that. Belagavi DC Nitesh Patil, who accompanied the team, spoke about the severe drought situation in the district.

Karnataka CM Explains Drought Situation To Central Team

In order to protect the interests of the state's farmers, Siddaramaiah met with an interministerial committee from the Central government on Thursday. The Chief Minister explained the state's drought condition by stating that 195 taluks have been designated as drought-prone. 

The CM said, farmers in the state are suffering as a result of the lack of rainfall 90% of the crop has been planted, and of that, over 42 lakh hectares have crop damage. He told the team, "Farmers' fields are green, but there is no yield. "

The CM stated, "The team must comprehend the circumstance throughout the tour and persuade the Central government about it in order to alleviate the plight of the farmers in the state. In September, there was some rain here and there. The monsoon season is winding down. This has created fear of a water and electricity deficit."
