Karnataka Congress To Postpone Mekedatu Padayatra After Leaders Test Covid Positive & HC Rebuke

New Delhi: After Karnataka High Court rebuke on Congress' Mekedatu padayatra and BBMP cancelling permission for its final leg in Bengaluru slated from January 14-19, Karnataka Congress on Thursday decided to postpone their 10-day-long Makedatu padayatra amid a sharp rise in Covid cases.

Meanwhile, four Congress leaders, who have taken part in the state-wide rally helmed by party chief DK Sivakumar, have tested positive for Covid and also of late the virus onset in Karnataka has grown awry as on Thursday over 15,000 cases were reported seeing a sharp increase in cases by at least 44 per cent compared to the previous day.

This decision of postponing the state-wide rally came after senior Congress leaders held a meeting and discussed the future course of the Mekedatu Padayatra in Ramanagara.

According to an ANI new agency update, Senior State Congress leaders held a meeting in Ramanagara to discuss the future course of action regarding Mekedatu Padayatra in wake of the cancellation of permission for the padayatra's final event in Bengaluru & the high court's observation.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai too urged KPCC chief Shivakumar and LoP Siddaramaiah to call of the Mekedatu Padayatra in view of sudden rise in Covid cases in the state. 

On Wednesday, The Karnataka High Court pulled up the ruling BJP government in the state for its inaction. "You know very well there is a Pandemic, how have you allowed this to continue?" The High Court reportedly questioned the state government in connection with the Congress' Mekedatu Padayatra.

After High Court's sharp criticism, the Bommai government in Karnataka have prohibited any participation of opposition leaders in the Mekedatu Padayatra with immediate effect. A day after, Karnataka Congress have decided to postpone the final leg of the rally in Bengaluru.
