Bengaluru Civic Body Bans Animal Slaughter, Meat Sale On Ram Navami

A BBMP official said that every year on Sri Rama Navami, besides Gandhi Jayanti, Sarvodaya Day and the other religious events, there is a ban on the sale of meat and animal slaughter.

New Delhi: The civic body of Bengaluru has prohibited slaughter of animals and sale of meat on the occasion of Sri Rama Navami on April 10.

According to a report by news agency PTI, "There will be a blanket ban on the slaughterhouses, animal slaughter and the sale of meat on Sri Rama Navami," said an order issued by the joint director of the animal husbandry department of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike.

The order is based on BBMP chief commissioner Gaurav Gupta's circular on April 3.

A BBMP official said that every year on Sri Rama Navami, besides Gandhi Jayanti, Sarvodaya Day and the other religious events, there is a ban on the sale of meat and animal slaughter.

There is a blanket ban on these practices at least eight days a year on various occasions, the official added.

Meanwhile, amid the row over halal meat ban in Karnataka, the government has been mulling over introducing guidelines for the slaughterhouses to adopt the ‘stunning’ method to kill animals.

According to a report by news agency IANS, minister for Animal Husbandry Prabhu Chauhan had earlier said that he would look into the demand by animal lovers who have written to the department seeking the ‘stunning’ method of slaughtering animals be made mandatory.

For the unversed, 'stunning' is a process that ensures that the animal is made unconscious to pain before being killed in the slaughterhouse.

It is to be noted that under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, the central government has recommended a 'stunning' method for the slaughter houses to follow.
