Unusual V-Day traditions around the world
New Delhi [India], Jan 15 (ANI): Turns out, not every culture chooses to declare their love with heart-shaped chocolate boxes and overpriced roses.
While you were choosing cards and planning candle-lit dinners on the Valentine's Day, other couples around the world celebrated the holiday quite differently.
Here are some of the traditions that others enjoy across the globe.
1. Denmark
To show they care, people here exchange white pressed flowers called Snowdrops. Danish men are also known to write women a romantic note or humorous poem - called a gaekkebrev - anonymously.
2. Italy
Here, the day is earmarked exclusively for lovers. Moreover, Baci Perugina chocolates, which have a romantic message written inside, make for a popular gift.
3. China
China has been celebrating its own version of Valentine's Day for centuries. Marked on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month in the Chinese calendar, the Qixi festival sees women traditionally praying to find good husbands or gain great sewing skills.
4. Germany
Viewed as a symbol of lust and luck, pigs are often seen on cards and presents. Moreover, this day is strictly for adults.
5. Estonia
Here, February 14 is actually observed as Friend's Day; It is all about celebrating friendship.
6. South Korea
Here, it's the ladies who spoil their men with chocolates. A month later, on White Day, men return the favor by splashing out for them, if their feelings are mutual.
7. South Africa
On this day, women in South Africa wear their hearts on their sleeves, literally. They pin the names of their love interests onto their shirtsleeves for the day. The practice is said to come from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia.
