Background

G20 Summit 2023 Delhi Highlights: Hello and welcome to G20 Summit 2023 live blog for all the latest updates on the two-day mega session. The G20 Leaders' Summit, a high-profile congregation of world leaders, continues into its second day on Sunday, September 10, with a packed schedule aimed at addressing pressing global issues. The summit, being held in New Delhi, has drawn significant attention from the international community.

The day's tentative schedule, as per Indian Standard Time (IST), unfolds as follows:

  • 08:00-09:00 AM - Arrival and welcome of HoDs at Rajghat
  • 09:10-09:25 AM - Wreath laying
  • 10:30-12:30 AM - Session 3: One Future

The leaders will continue to hold bilateral meetings thereafter. PM Modi will hold a working lunch meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and a pull-aside meeting with Canada as well as bilateral talks with Comoros, Turkiye, UAE, South Korea, EU/EC, Brazil, and Nigeria, as per news agency ANI.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant will address a closing press conference around 2 PM, followed by another presser by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at 3 PM.

The G20 Leaders' Summit, which commenced on Saturday, witnessed the presence of prominent world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, among others. Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Premier Li Qiang, respectively.

During the summit's inaugural day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made significant announcements. He unveiled the New Delhi G20 Leadership Declaration, highlighting the reaffirmation of the group's national positions and resolutions, previously adopted at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The declaration underscored the adverse consequences of the Ukraine conflict on global supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation, and economic growth.

In a momentous move, Prime Minister Modi declared the inclusion of the 55-nation African Union as a permanent member of the G20. This decision is seen as a step towards enhancing inclusivity within the group and aligning with the aspirations of the Global South.

With the specter of the Ukraine conflict looming large over the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Modi urged leaders to bridge the existing trust deficit and collaboratively seek tangible solutions to the tumultuous global economy, terrorism, and the management of critical resources such as food, fuel, and fertilizers.

The G20 joint declaration echoed Prime Minister Modi's sentiment, making a notable reference to the phrase, "Today's era must not be of war." During a press conference, India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, emphasized that the G20 was not intended to be a platform for resolving geopolitical and security matters but acknowledged their significant impact on the global economy, with a particular focus on the Ukraine conflict.

Furthermore, G20 leaders urged for the full and timely implementation of a UN-brokered agreement, enabling Ukraine to export its grain through the Black Sea to international markets. The leaders reiterated the importance of upholding food and energy security and called for the cessation of military actions and attacks on relevant infrastructure, as articulated in the G20 declaration.

As the G20 Summit enters its second day, the global community anticipates constructive dialogues and collaborative efforts toward addressing the formidable challenges facing the world today.

G20 Summit 2023 Live — Congress MP Shashi Tharoor lauds G-20 Sherpa, Jaishankar in ensuring a joint Delhi declaration

On G-20 Summit, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor says, "I'm in touch with both Amitabh Kant, the G-20 Sherpa, and with our foreign minister, and I would congratulate them because what they have done is certainly very, very good for India. It is not easy to pull off a diplomatic negotiation like this. They both seem to have put in a lot of hard effort, and I think one should give credit where credit is due... But as far as the achievement of actually squaring the circle, which is an impossible task almost on Ukraine is concerned, it's really very impressive... So it really was an extremely effective achievement to pull this off..." (ANI)
