Crest Of INS Imphal, First Warship Named After Northeastern City, To Be Unveiled Tomorrow

The ship was named Imphal in April 2019 during the time of its launch and was delivered by MDL to the Indian Navy on October 20 this year.

The crest of Yard 12706 (Imphal) will be unveiled on Tuesday in the national capital, said the Ministry of Defence in a statement on Monday. The ship is the third amongst the four Project 15B guided missile stealth destroyers that is being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

The Tuesday event will be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

The ship was named Imphal in April 2019 during the time of its launch and was delivered by MDL to the Indian Navy on October 20 this year.

The ship recently carried out a successful firing of an Extended Range BrahMos missile, as part of its pre-commissioning trials, making it an ideal milestone for conducting the Crest Unveiling Event for the ship, the statement added.

The Naval ships and submarines are named after prominent cities, mountain ranges, rivers, ports and islands as per the maritime traditions and naval customs.

"Indian Navy is immensely proud of its latest and technologically advanced warship named after the historic city of Imphal. This is also the first capital warship to be named after a city in the North-Eastern region of India, the approval for which was accorded by the President of India on 16 Apr 2019," the Ministry said in its statement.

The ship has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by MDL.

Yard 12706 (Imphal) is also the first indigenous destroyer to have the shortest time taken to build and complete its sea trials.
