Ideas Of India Summit 2024: Suella Braverman, the former UK Home Secretary, stood before a diverse audience, her voice resonating with pride and hope. In a session moderated by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, she shared her deep connection to India, a land intertwined with her family's history and her own identity. Her words painted a picture of optimism and collaboration as she hailed India's success on the global stage. With enthusiasm, she emphasised the immense potential for a UK-India trade deal in the wake of Brexit, envisioning a future where both nations could flourish together.
Yet, amidst the promise of progress, Suella Braverman addressed the pressing challenges facing the UK, particularly the issue of illegal immigration. With sincerity, she acknowledged the strain it posed on border security and the shared commitment to find humane solutions.
"Unprecedented illegal migration presents a challenge that demands our attention. It's a recent occurrence, post-Brexit, and one that we must confront with resolve. Prime Minister Rishi and I stand united in our determination to address this humanitarian challenge," Suella Braverman said.
'Many Aspects Of History Must Be Condemned'
In a poignant reflection on history, Suella acknowledged the shadows of the past while embracing the potential of the present and the future. Her words carried a sense of reconciliation as she acknowledged the injustices of the past while celebrating India's journey of self-governance and resilience.
"There are many aspects of history that cannot be condoned and must be condemned. But if we look at the present and the future, India is a great example of a country where self-governance has been a great success and post-Empire, India has embraced everything that was left and excelled beyond expectations. Looking at the Commonwealth, this has been a great relationship and a great community of nations that have historic link and can work collaboratively for the future. I still maintain a 'proud child of the Empire'," said Suella Braverman on British atrocities in India before Independence.
In Suella Braverman's narrative, history and hope intertwined, offering a glimpse into a world where collaboration triumphs over division and where the echoes of the past propel us towards a brighter tomorrow.
