Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023: Managing Side Effects Of Chemotherapy And Radiation

Overcoming side effects of chemotherapy and radiation can be challenging, but there are strategies that can help patients in managing these adverse effects and improve their overall quality of life.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are powerful cancer treatments, but they can have side effects that vary depending on the individual, the type of treatment, and the specific cancer being treated. It's important to note that not everyone will experience the same side effects, and some may experience them to a lesser degree than others. Overcoming the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer can be challenging, but there are several strategies and supportive measures that can help patients in managing these adverse effects and improve their overall quality of life.

According to Dr Kundan Singh Chufal who is a Senior Consultant & Unit Head of Radiation Oncology at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute (RGCI), "To manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, patients may need a multi-pronged approach. This can include medications to control nausea and vomiting, pain management strategies, maintaining optimal nutritional intake despite appetite changes, and using skin care routines to manage skin irritation. Additionally, psychosocial support, including counseling and support groups, can help in managing emotional and mental stress related to cancer treatment. Regular monitoring and follow-up care are also crucial to adjust management strategies based on individual responses and needs."

Strategies To Overcome Side Effects Of Chemotherapy And Radiation

Dr. Deepak Jha who is a Chief of Breast Surgery & Sr. Consultant: Surgical Oncology, at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram listed down the following ways to overcome breast cancer:

  • Medical Guidance: Always consult with your medical team for personalized advice and treatment adjustments. They can prescribe medications to alleviate specific side effects or modify your treatment plan if needed.
  • Nutrition: Eating a well-balanced diet can help in managing the side effects. Focus on foods that provide essential nutrients and energy and consult with a nutritionist if necessary.
  • Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during chemotherapy. Drinking plenty of water can help flush toxins from the body and reduce the risk of some side effects, like kidney problems.
  • Rest and Sleep: Chemotherapy and radiation can be physically exhausting. Prioritize rest and sleep to help your body recover and cope with treatment-related fatigue.
  • Exercise: Do some light to moderate exercise, as recommended by your healthcare team, to combat fatigue, maintain muscle strength, and improve mood.
  • Emotional Support: Seek emotional support from friends, family, support groups, or mental health professionals. Dealing with cancer and its treatment can be emotionally draining, and it's essential to address your emotional well-being.
  • Skin Care: For radiation therapy, proper skincare in the treated area is needed to minimize skin irritation. Follow your healthcare provider's recommendations for skincare products and practices.

Dr Pankaj Goyal, who is a Consultant – Medical Oncology at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute (RGCI) also suggested the following tips:

  • Manage nausea and vomiting: Your healthcare team can prescribe anti-nausea medications to help control these side effects. Eating small, frequent meals, avoiding strong odours, and staying hydrated can also help.
  • Fatigue: Fatigue is a common side effect. Listen to your body and rest when needed. Gentle exercise like walking or yoga may help boost your energy levels. It's important not to push yourself too hard.
  • Hair loss: Hair loss is common with chemotherapy. Consider wearing a wig, scarf, or hat to cover your head if it bothers you. Hair typically grows back once treatment is completed.
  • Skin care: Radiation therapy can cause skin irritation, redness, and dryness in the treatment area. Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare products and follow your healthcare team's recommendations for caring for your skin.
  • Mouth and throat care: Radiation therapy can affect the mouth and throat, causing soreness or difficulty swallowing. Avoid spicy, acidic, or rough-textured foods, and maintain good oral hygiene.

Coping With Hair Loss During Breast Cancer Treatment:

Facing a breast cancer diagnosis is undoubtedly challenging, and the prospect of losing your hair due to chemotherapy or radiation therapy can add to the emotional burden. However, it's important to remember that hair loss is often a temporary side effect of treatment.

Here are some tips suggested by Dr Monika Pansari, who is the HOD & Sr Consultant Surgical Oncology (Breast & Gynaec Oncologist) at Gleneagles Hospitals Kengeri, Bengaluru to help you cope with hair loss and maintain a positive outlook during your breast cancer journey:

Explore Hair Preservation Options

Before starting treatment, discuss hair preservation options with your medical team. Some patients have had success with cold caps, which are worn during chemotherapy to reduce blood flow to the scalp and minimize hair loss. Ask your healthcare provider if this is a viable option for you.

Embrace Scarves and Head Wraps

Scarves, head wraps, and turbans are stylish and practical alternatives to wigs. They can be customized to match your personal style and provide comfort during treatment. Experiment with different styles to find what suits you best.

Short Haircuts and Hair Accessories

If you decide to keep some hair during treatment, consider getting a shorter haircut. Shorter hair may appear fuller and be easier to manage as you experience hair loss. Hair accessories like headbands and clips can also help you feel more put together.

Consider a Wig or Hairpiece

Many breast cancer patients find comfort in having a wig or hairpiece on hand. There are countless styles and options available, allowing you to choose a look that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Some organizations even offer free wigs to cancer patients.

Hair and Scalp Care

Gentle care of your scalp and remaining hair is essential. Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo and avoid excessive heat styling. A soft, wide-toothed comb can help minimize hair breakage. Additionally, protect your scalp from the sun with a hat or sunscreen when outdoors.

Reach Out for Support

Breast cancer can be emotionally taxing, and hair loss can exacerbate those feelings. Don't hesitate to seek support from a therapist, support group, or counselor who specializes in cancer-related issues. Talking about your concerns can provide emotional relief.

Focus on Self-Care

Self-care is crucial during your breast cancer journey. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it's spending time with loved ones, practicing meditation, or pursuing a hobby. Taking care of your emotional well-being can positively impact your overall health.

Remember that hair loss is just one aspect of your breast cancer treatment, and it's temporary. Your health and well-being are the top priorities, and there are many resources available to help you navigate this challenging time. Lean on your support system, maintain a positive outlook, and know that you are not alone in this journey. Your strength and resilience will carry you through, and your hair will grow back in time.
