Josh Wardle, a US-based software engineer, developed Wordle in 2021. The New York Times later acquired it in January 2022, but did not make any changes to its features.

The objective of the game is for players to correctly guess the randomly generated word of the day using six chances. The game uses a system of coloured squares to indicate the status of the letters entered, with green indicating the correct position, yellow indicating the correct letter but incorrect position, and grey indicating an incorrect letter.
