Fact Check: Did Rekha Gupta Buy ‘Car Worth Rs 50 Lakh Within 48 Hours Of Becoming Delhi CM’?

The claim has gone viral with a 29-second video of a black MG Gloster bearing the number plate ‘DL11CM0001’ with ‘GOVT. OF DELHI’ written in red on the front of the bonnet.

The Verdict: False Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi have also used this car during their tenure as Delhi chief minister.

What is the claim?

A 29-second video of a black MG Gloster bearing the number plate ‘DL11CM0001’ with ‘GOVT. OF DELHI’ written in red on the front of the bonnet has gone viral on social media, with users claiming that the new Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, bought a “car worth Rs 50 lakh for herself within 48 hours of being elected”.

Some users also compared Gupta with the former Delhi CM, Arvind Kejriwal, claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) hypocrisy has been exposed as the party had earlier criticised the cost of Kejriwal’s car being as much as Rs 20 lakh.

However, we found that former CMs Kejriwal and Atishi also used the same car in question, confirming that it was bought before CM Gupta assumed office.

Where is the video from?

We noted that the viral video carried the logo of the news agency, Indo-Asian News Service (IANS), which led us to the original video (archived here) uploaded by the news agency on February 20, 2025. The caption read, “Delhi: CM security arrived to escort Rekha Gupta for the official proceedings”.

Additionally, a video report published by ET Now (archived here) on YouTube on February 20, 2025, showed the same car as in the viral video and noted that Gupta used the car to go to the oath-taking ceremony. The video was titled: “Rekha Gupta Rides Arvind Kejriwal’s Former Official Car For The Oath Ceremony.”

Car was used by CMs Kejriwal and Atishi

Using keywords, we looked for older videos of former Delhi CMs Kejriwal and Atishi to determine whether the car in question was bought during Gupta’s tenure or earlier.

We found an X post (archived here) by the news agency, Asian News International (ANI), from February 12, 2024, showing then-CM Kejriwal leaving his residence in Delhi.

The video in the post showed the same black Morris Garages car as the one seen in the viral clips. We matched the car’s number plate to confirm this. We also found another instance of Kejriwal using the same car in September 2024, uploaded by ANI (archived here).

Additionally, we found videos of Kejriwal from April 2023 and July 2022 (archived here) using the same car with the same number plate as seen in the viral video.

Next, we found a YouTube video (archived here) uploaded by ANI on February 9, 2025, titled, ‘Atishi Resigns as Delhi CM after BJP’s clean sweep win in Delhi’. The same black-coloured Morris Garages car with the same number plate seen in the viral clips also appears in this video, which shows Atishi leaving after resigning as the chief minister.

The above findings confirm that the car in question had been used much before the newly elected chief minister assumed office.

Registration of the car

According to information provided on Parivahan Sewa, the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India, the car in question was registered on April 22, 2022, further confirming that it was not bought during the tenure of the newly elected Delhi CM.

Official records identify the car as an ‘MG GLOSTER DE 4X4 6 SEAT SAVVY’. According to information provided on the official MG website, the price of a similar variant starts at around Rs 44 lakh.

The verdict

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta didn’t buy a new black MG Gloster within “48 hours of being elected”. The car was registered in April 2022, as per the official document, and former CMs Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi also used it during their tenure.
