Ajith Kumar's 'Thunivu' Does Better Than Vijay's 'Varisu' At Box Office On Day 1 In Tamil Nadu

Varisu' and 'Thunivu' released in equal number of screens in Tamil Nadu. Shows as early as 1 AM were organized for both films.

New Delhi: The Tamil film industry has seen one of the biggest box office clashes this year with Thalapathy Vijay's 'Varisu' and superstar Ajith Kumar's 'Thunivu' which was released around the occasion of Pongal. Despite the clash, both films have done supremely well at the box office. As per reports, 'Varisu' and 'Thunivu' have collectively done a gross business of Rs. 42.5 crores on the opening day.

Trade analyst site Andhra Box Office took to its official Twitter handle and shared the opening day box office numbers of both films. The portal tweeted, "Thunivu ( ₹23 crore gross) has won the first day battle against Varisu ( ₹19.5 crore gross) in Tamil Nadu. Approximate figures. But mostly due to better distribution! In All Red Giant Areas of #Varisu, both are neck and neck."

 

As per the tweet, it is understood that Ajith Kumar starrer 'Thunivu' has fared better than 'Varisu' at the box office on Day 1. While 'Thunivu' collected Rs. 23 crores, 'Varisu' collected Rs. 19.5 crores.

This is also the first time in the last nine years that Ajith Kumar and Vijay's films have clashed at the box office. For those unaware, Pongal is a major festival down South and many major Telugu and Tamil films are released around the occasion.

As per Hindustan Times, 'Varisu' and 'Thunivu' released in equal number of screens in Tamil Nadu. Shows as early as 1 AM were organized for both films.

Meanwhile, a little bit about both films. 'Thunivu' is a heist thriller and also stars Manu Warrier in the female lead. The film also marks the third  collaboration between Ajith and director H Vinoth and producer Boney Kapoor.

On the other hand, 'Varisu' is a family drama starring Thalapathy Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, the film also marks Vijay's debut in Telugu as the film was simultaneously shot in Telugu along with its Tamil version.
