From Indian 2 To Vikram, Kamal Haasan Ruled Karnataka Screens; What Will Be The Fate Of Thug Life?

Kamal Haasan’s upcoming action-packed drama Thug Life, directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, has run into stormy waters in Karnataka due to a political and cultural controversy.

Kamal Haasan’s upcoming action-packed drama Thug Life, directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, has run into stormy waters in Karnataka — and it’s not over box office competition. Just days ahead of its nationwide release on June 5, the film’s Karnataka debut has been put on hold due to a political and cultural controversy that’s now making headlines.

Thug Life faces ban in Karnataka

The decision, announced by the film’s producers on Tuesday, comes after widespread backlash over Kamal Haasan’s past remarks suggesting that “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” The Karnataka High Court weighed in on the matter, criticising the actor-politician for not issuing a public apology — something the court believes could have de-escalated tensions.

“An apology could have defused the controversy,” observed Justice Nagaprasanna during a hearing on Raaj Kamal Films International’s plea.

The production house has now sought police protection to safely screen the film amid boycott calls by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 10.

How Much Kamal Haasan's previous films earn in Karnataka?

Karnataka has historically been a key market for both Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam. Industry watchers warn that delaying or scrapping Thug Life’s release in the state could deal a significant financial blow.

Haasan’s previous outing Indian 2 made a modest Rs 9 crore in Karnataka, while his 2022 blockbuster Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, grossed nearly Rs 25 crore.

Thug Life director Mani Ratnam’s period drama Ponniyin Selvan: II also saw major success in the region, earning around Rs 20 crore, underlining how crucial Karnataka is to big-budget Tamil releases.

With tempers flaring and the spotlight fixed on the controversy, it remains to be seen whether Thug Life can reclaim its place on Karnataka’s big screens — and at what cost.
