Varun Dhawan Admits Feeling Insecure Of Sidharth Malhotra During Student Of the Year: 'He Was Tall, Handsome'

Varun Dhawan admitted that he felt overshadowed by his co-star Sidharth Malhotra, who he described as tall, broad, and conventionally good-looking.

Varun Dhawan began his acting journey in 2012 with Karan Johar’s Student of the Year alongside debutants Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. However, Varun recently opened up about feelings of insecurity while stepping into the limelight.

Varun Dhawan on being insecure with Sidharth Malhotra

During an interview with Shubhankar Mishra on YouTube, Varun candidly shared his experience of debuting alongside another male lead. He admitted that he felt overshadowed by his co-star Sidharth Malhotra, who he described as tall, broad, and conventionally good-looking. These comparisons left him wondering if he would be able to carve out his own identity.

“He was tall and wide, good looking, and there were two heroes in the film. At that time, I felt that he is amazing and looks handsome, so people will only watch him. Will people even notice me or not? What if my dream only stays a dream?” Varun shared.

Varun Dhawan on nepotism

Varun, the son of veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, also reflected on the challenges posed by the nepotism debate, which gained traction around the time of his debut. He recalled, “The negativity around nepotism also started at that time. During that period, I hadn’t planned anything before I entered the industry. I only knew that I’d worked hard and I am deserving, but people were saying something else.”

Acknowledging the initial criticism, Varun added, “The reception has not always been flowery. That’s what people feel. But I have had to fight that a lot. No matter what happens, I will keep fighting.”

Since his debut, Varun has showcased a range of performances, from light-hearted roles in films like Main Tera Hero and Judwaa 2 to intense characters in Badlapur. He earned praise for his nuanced performances in October and Sui Dhaaga and displayed his flair for dance in ABCD 2.

Varun’s recent projects include Citadel: Honey Bunny and Baby John.
