UP Nikay Chunav Results: BJP Secures 813 Seats Of Corporators, SP Finishes Second With 191

In Uttar Pradesh's urban local body elections, the ruling BJP won 813 of the 1,420 corporator seats, while the opposition Samajwadi Party won 191 and the Bahujan Samaj Party 85.

The ruling BJP won 813 of the 1,420 corporator seats in Uttar Pradesh's urban local body elections, while the opposition Samajwadi Party won 191 and the Bahujan Samaj Party 85. The BJP won all 17 mayoral elections in the state on Saturday, including Varanasi, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Bareilly, Mathura-Vrindavan, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Aligarh, Shahjahanpur, Ghaziabad, Agra, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Firozabad, and Meerut.

However, the results for the other local bodies were mixed, with independent candidates also winning. Uttar Pradesh has 760 urban local bodies spread across 75 districts.

According to the State Election Commission (SEC), Wasim (4,215 votes) of the Samajwadi Party defeated BJP's Rupesh (4,151 votes) for the position of Nagar Panchayat chairperson of Khetasarai in the Jaunpur district. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate finished third in the election.

According to the SEC, 191 Samajwadi Party (SP) candidates were elected as state corporators, followed by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with 85, Congress with 77, AIMIM with 19, Rashtriya Lok Dal with 10, Aam Aadmi Party with eight, and Azad Samaj Party (Kanshiram) with five, and the Indian Union Muslim League, Jan Adhikar Party, Peace Party, and NISHAD party with one.

The BJP won 89 of the 199 Nagar Palika Parishad chairperson positions, while independent candidates won 41. The Samajwadi Party won 35 seats, the BSP 16, the RLD seven, the Congress four, and the AAP and AIMIM three each. Apna Dal (Sonelal), a BJP ally, won one seat.

In the election for Nagar Palika Parishad members, independent candidates won 3,130 of the 5,327 positions (58.76 per cent). The BJP came in second place with 1,360 seats, followed by the SP (425), BSP (191), Congress (91), RLD (40), AIMIM (33) and AAP (30). The BJP won 191 of the 544 Nagar Panchayat chairperson positions, while independents won 195. The SP won 78 of these positions, the BSP 37, and the Congress 14.

Independent candidates ran for Nagar Panchayat seats as well, winning 4,824 of the 7,177 available. The BJP won 1,403 seats, followed by the SP with 485, the BSP with 215, the Congress with 77, and the RLD with 38.

Following the announcement of the majority of the results on Saturday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath thanked the people of Uttar Pradesh and congratulated BJP workers on forming a "triple-engine government" in the state.

The term "triple-engine" is used by BJP leaders to describe the party's rule at the Centre, state, and local levels.

Voting was also held in the two-phase urban local body elections to elect 198 chairpersons and 5,260 members of nagar palika parishads, 542 chairpersons of Nagar panchayats, and 7,104 members of Nagar panchayats. In total, 162 public representatives were elected unopposed, despite the fact that there were 83,378 candidates running for 14,522 positions.

In the urban local body elections, 53 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the second phase covering 38 districts on May 11, while 52 per cent voted in the first phase covering 37 districts on May 4.

The State Election Commission reported that 4.32 crore people were eligible to vote in the urban local body elections. In 2017, the elections were held in three phases, with 53 per cent of the population voting.
