UP Election: Mamata Banerjee Shown Black Flags By Hindu Yuva Vahini During Varanasi visit

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced protests and was shown black flags by Hindu Yuva Vahini members during her visit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi on Wednesday, PTI reported.

Mamata Banerjee is in Varanasi on a two-day visit to campaign for Samajwadi Party in the Uttar Pradesh election. 

Banerjee faced the protests when she was heading towards the Dashashwamedh Ghat to attend the 'Ganga Aarti'. Hindu Yuva Vahini activists gathered in front of her convoy at the Chetganj crossing.

The protesters shouted slogans against her and waved black flags as the police tried to disperse them. Banerjee got down from her vehicle and stood on the road for some time, PTI reported.

A visibly miffed Banerjee then sat on the ghat steps to watch the 'Ganga Aarti' instead of a chair.

When her convoy was passing through Gadaulia area, BJP supporters showed her black flags and raised slogans of "Mamata Banerjee wapas jao (go back)" and "Jai Shri Ram".

The police personnel deployed in the area tried to snatch the black flags and chase away the protesters.

The TMC supremo, a bitter critic of PM Modi, will hold a joint rally with Akhilesh Yadav in Varanasi ahead of the seventh and final phase of the Uttar Pradesh election. Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary is also expected to attend the rally, PTI reported.

She will return to Kolkata on Friday evening.

Mamata Banerjee had visited Uttar Pradesh on February 7-8 and held a joint press conference with Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow, where she predicted SP's victory against the BJP.
