KTR also serves as the working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). He is the son of K. Chandrashekar Rao, the founder of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now Bharat Rashtra Samiti).
In 2009, KTR entered politics, winning the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Elections from the Sircilla constituency with a narrow victory margin of 171 votes against independent candidate K. K. Mahender Reddy. Subsequently, during the Telangana statehood movement, KTR and others resigned from the Assembly.
In July 2010, the High Court of Andhra Pradesh mandated by-polls in Sircilla and Vemulawada, among other Telangana towns. KTR contested again from Sircilla, defeating K. K. Mahender Reddy (now with the Indian National Congress) with a significant margin of 68,219 votes.
On June 2, 2014, KTR took office as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Telangana and assumed the role of Cabinet Minister for Information Technology and Panchayat Raj.
However, KTR has come under attack multiple times over dynasty politics row. Earlier, Revanth Reddy mocked KTR by saying that he was from merit quota while KTR was from management quota.
