Mainpuri Bypoll Result: Dimple Yadav Wins Seat Held By Mulayam Singh Yadav By 2.8 Lakh Votes

Mainpuri Bypoll Results 2022: Considered as the SP's bastion, the seat was held by party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and got vacated after his death on October 10.

Mainpuri Byelection Results: Dimple Yadav, Samajwadi Party leader and wife of party chief Akhilesh Yadav, has won from the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat by defeating BJP's Raghuraj Singh Shakya by 2,88,461 votes.. She has managed to retain the seat previously held by her late father-in-law and veteran politician Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Considered as the SP's bastion, the seat was held by party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and got vacated after his death on October 10. In 2019, Mulayam Singh Yadav won the Mainpuri seat by defeating BJP candidate Prem Singh Shakya by 94,389 votes.

After winning the election, Dimple Yadav said the victory "is a tribute to Netaji (late Mulayam Singh Yadav)". "I want to thank all the supporters of the Samajwadi Party who worked rigorously for our victory. I also want to thank the people of Mainpuri for believing in me," ANI quoted Yadav as saying.

Raghuraj Singh Shakya, a former confidant of Mulayam's brother Shivpal Singh Yadav, was the BJP candidate for the seat.

In a tweet, Pragatisheel Samajwadi party (Lohia) founder Shivpal Singh Yadav thanked the people of Mainpuri and also his assembly constituency Jaswant Nagar, which lies in it.

The Mainpuri parliamentary constituency had registered 54.01 per cent voting.

Mainpuri was the seat from which Mulayam was first elected an MP in 1996. He successfully contested from the seat three more times -- 2004, 2009 and 2019. In the 2014 bypoll, Akhilesh's nephew Tej Pratap Yadav won the seat.

Dimple Yadav has contested the Lok Sabha polls four times -- twice each during bypolls and general elections. She won twice from Kannauj,

Dimple's maiden attempt to enter the Lok Sabha in 2009 failed when Congress's Raj Babbar defeated her in the Firozabad Lok Sabha bypoll. That byelection was held as Akhilesh chose to vacate the Firozabad seat and retained Kannauj.

She won the Kannauj Lok Sabha bypoll unopposed in 2012 when Akhilesh resigned the seat to enter the state legislative council as he had become the Uttar Pradesh chief minister. She then won the same seat in the 2014 general elections but lost it to BJP's Subrat Pathak in 2019.

Apart from Mainpuri, bypolls were also held for Rampur Sadar and Khatauli Assembly constituencies.

BJP's Akash Saxena on Thursday won the Rampur Sadar seat in the Uttar Pradesh bypolls. The constituency has been Azam Khan's bastion since 2002.

The constituency saw a poor voter turnout of just 40% on Monday. The Samajwadi Party had alleged that people were not allowed to vote and were thrashed by goons to prevent them from stepping out of their homes.
