Lok Sabha Polls, Phase 2: Nearly 61% Turnout Across 88 Seats. Tripura Logs Highest, Maha, UP, Bihar Lowest

Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Phase 2: The second phase witnessed 60.96% voter turnout in 88 constituencies across 13 states. Tripura had the highest turnout, while Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar had the lowest.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Phase 2: Voting has concluded in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections, covering 88 constituencies across 13 states and union territories, with an overall turnout of 60.96%. There were reports of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) breakdowns in Kerala, causing delays while the Congress demanded repolling in Manipur alleging that voters were being forced to vote only for the BJP’s alliance partner.

In terms of state-wise turnout, Tripura logged the highest voting percentage while Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar recorded the lowest, as per the approximate figures released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on its turnout app.

Key leaders in the fray including Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Kailash Choudhary, and Rajeev Chandrasekhar contested in the 88 constituencies.

Rahul Gandhi's constituency Wayanad in Kerala logged a 69.51% turnout, and Shashi Tharoor and Rajeev Chandrasekhar contested Thiruvananthapuram at 63.86%, as per the ECI's approximate figures.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented on the voting outcome, suggesting strong support for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA, saying, "Phase Two has been too good! Gratitude to the people across India who have voted today. The unparalleled support for NDA is going to disappoint the Opposition even more. Voters want NDA’s good governance. Youth and women voters are powering the strong NDA support."

On the other hand, the Congress alleged that the NPF voters in Manipur were forced to vote only for the BJP’s alliance partner.

Polling took place in various regions including 13 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan, Jammu constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, eight seats in Uttar Pradesh, Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency, part of Outer Manipur parliamentary seat, five seats in Assam, three in northern West Bengal, and five in Bihar.

Notable figures like Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, N R Narayana Murthy, Sudha Murty, Rahul Dravid, and Prakash Raj were among the early voters in Karnataka.

Instances of voter disenchantment led to polling boycotts in Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), Banswara (Rajasthan), and Parbhani (Maharashtra). Confrontations and fake voting were reported in the Barmer-Jaisalmer Lok Sabha constituency.

In Chhattisgarh, polling occurred in Naxal-affected areas like Kanker, Rajnandgaon, and Mahasamund constituencies, while Maharashtra witnessed voting in eight Lok Sabha constituencies.

In the 2019 elections, BJP secured victories in 52 seats, with allies winning 12 out of the 88 contested. The INDIA bloc constituents had clinched 23 seats previously.

The first phase recorded a turnout of 62.37%, with the upcoming third phase scheduled for May 7 covering 94 seats across 12 states and Union territories. Voting is yet to be conducted in five more phases across various states.
