Delhi Elections 2025: What’s Open, What’s Closed Amid Public Holiday On Polling Day

The Delhi government has declared a public holiday on February 5 for the 2025 Assembly Election to enhance voter turnout. Know services that remain open and those that remain closed.

The Delhi government has declared a public holiday on Wednesday, February 5, for the Delhi Assembly Election 2025, aiming to ensure maximum voter participation. The election will be held in a single phase, with results set to be announced on February 8. While all government and private offices will be closed on polling day, essential services such as Metro and public bus services will continue without disruption.  

Delhi Election 2025: What Will Remain Shut Amid Polling

A government notification issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) confirmed that all government offices, local and autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi would remain closed. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena stated, "There will be a public holiday on February 5 for all government offices, local and autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings under the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, in view of the General Election to the Delhi Legislative Assembly."  

Similarly, all banks will also remain closed on polling day to facilitate voting for employees.  

Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will be shut on February 5, as many of them serve as polling stations. Some institutions may also remain closed a day before polling to allow for election preparations.  

Jamia Millia Islamia has announced a two-day holiday for its Middle School, stating that both students and staff will be on leave on February 4 and 5. According to an official statement, the school premises will be handed over to the authorities for election-related arrangements.  

In line with Election Commission guidelines, all liquor shops and licensed establishments in Delhi will be closed from 6 PM on February 3 to 6 PM on February 5. Cinema halls will also remain shut on polling day.  

Delhi Election 2025: What Will Remain Open Amid Polling

Despite the closures, essential services such as hospitals and pharmacies will remain open. Grocery stores, restaurants, and cafes will also continue to operate without restrictions.  

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that Metro services will start early at 4 AM on polling day. The Delhi Assembly elections, set for February 5, will see a three-cornered contest as voting takes place across all 70 constituencies from 7 AM to 6 PM.
