Kejriwal Accuses Haryana Govt Of 'Poisoning' Yamuna Water, ECI Seeks Factual Report From Saini Govt

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal accused the Haryana government of 'poisoning' Yamuna water, leading to high ammonia levels affecting Delhi's water supply during the election.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Haryana government of "poisoning" the Yamuna river water, which supplies drinking water to the national capital. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is now said to have sought a factual report from the Nayab Singh Saini-led government in Haryana on the matter.

The controversy erupted after Delhi CM Atishi and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann moved the ECI on Monday, alleging high ammonia levels in the water supplied from Haryana to Delhi, impacting the water supply during the ongoing assembly election process. According to news agency PTI, sources said the ECI has directed the Haryana government to submit a factual report by noon on Tuesday.

Kejriwal launched an attack on the Haryana government, comparing the situation to a war-like act. He alleged, “BJP has done such an act that has never been done in history before. The people of Delhi get water to drink from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. In Yamuna, water flows into Delhi from Haryana. BJP’s Haryana government has poisoned the water in Yamuna. However, the Delhi Jal Board was vigilant enough to stop that water from coming to Delhi; otherwise, it would have caused mass genocide in Delhi.”

He further claimed, “The BJP government has mixed such poison in the water that it cannot be treated even by water treatment plants. It has caused water scarcity in one-third of Delhi. Such politics is done by enemy countries—like how the USA bombed Japan with nuclear bombs. Some countries use biological weapons to poison river water. The same has been done by the BJP government. They have done this to create chaos in Delhi so that people die and AAP gets blamed.”

Kejriwal added that Atishi and Bhagwant Mann had written to the ECI and sought an urgent meeting on the matter. “I hope the Election Commission will intervene and protect the people of Delhi from such a tragedy,” he said.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini Counters Kejriwal, Says 'His Habit And Thinking To Allege And Then Run Away'

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini strongly refuted the allegations, accusing Kejriwal of making baseless claims.

“It is his habit and thinking to allege and then run away… I said that you (Arvind Kejriwal) send your chief secretary, and I will ask my chief secretary to check the quality of water at Sonipat from where the Yamuna enters Delhi. He talks about ammonia. He claims scarcity of water—but there is no scarcity; the issue lies in the distribution system,” Saini asserted.

“He has been unable to manage the distribution of water in 10 years—even though he promised it from the stage, people are still getting polluted water. He should work instead of making allegations...The people of Delhi have made up their minds, and they will teach him a lesson,” he remarked.

Nayab Saini highlighted that the Haryana government has worked to set up to manage the distribution of water in the state as he slammed Kejriwal for "leveling allegations and then running away."

This controversy comes as the AAP is in a direct contest with the BJP in Delhi Election 2025 set to take place on February 5, 2025. The results for the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be declared on February 8.
