New Delhi: Intensifying its attack on PM Narendra Modi, over his recent remark on former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Congress party has written to Election Commission of India (ECI) demanding action against the PM alleging him of violating Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in his speech. On Saturday, PM Modi while addressing an election rally in Uttar Pradesh had said, the life of Congress president Rahul Gandhi's father Rajiv Gandhi ended as 'Bhrashtachari number 1'. "Your father was termed 'Mr Clean' by his courtiers, but his life ended as 'Bhrashtachari No 1’,” Modi had said. The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee said in a letter dated May 05, “the statement by PM is not only the violation of the Model Code of Conduct but also an insult of Bharat Ratna awardee martyr. Hence, we appeal the EC to take action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by barring him from speaking at public rallies.” In his speech, PM Modi was apparently referring to Bofors scam, in which Rajiv Gandhi was accused of receiving kickbacks from Swedish defence manufacturer, Bofors, for the sale of artillery guns to India On Saturday, top Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi and MNS chief Raj Thackeray slammed PM Modi over his statement. “Modi Ji, The battle is over. Your Karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you.  All my love and a huge hug,” wrote Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Priyanka Gandhi also gave a sharp reaction to PM’s statement on Twitter and said:  “The PM who humiliated martyrs by asking for votes in name of their martyrdom, insulted martyrdom of a righteous man. People of Amethi will give reply to him, for whom Rajiv Gandhi gave his life. Yes Modiji, this country never forgives deceit.” In a tweet, MNS chief Raj Thackeray said, "Hatred, endless lying and absolutely no qualms in transgressing the decorum of public life are the three characteristics that mark the term of Narendra Modi." This stands intensified with his latest statements against the late Rajiv Gandhi and the nation will definitely not pardon it," he said. Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot Sunday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remark against the late premier Rajiv Gandhi was an "insult" to the people of the country and reflected his "frustration" in the face of imminent defeat in the Lok Sabha election. Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lowering the political discourse to gutter level by calling Rajiv Gandhi "corrupt".
