Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel Files Nomination For Patan Seat, To Contest Against Nephew Vijay

Chhattisgarh Election 2023: Assembly Speaker Charan Das Mahant and State Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu accompanied CM Bhupesh Baghel during the nomination process.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel officially filed his nomination on Monday for the upcoming assembly polls, which are scheduled for next month. Baghel, 62 years old, expressed confidence in the Congress party's ability to retain power in the state. The Chief Minister marked this important step in his election campaign by posting pictures on his social media handle, showcasing the moment of filing the nomination papers at the Durg Collectorate.

Assembly Speaker Charan Das Mahant and State Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu accompanied Baghel during the nomination process. Baghel shared his candidature on social media, emphasising his commitment to bring the Congress party back into power.

"With the blessings of Chhattisgarh Mahtari (Mother Chhattisgarh), today I have filed a nomination as a candidate again from Patan assembly constituency. #fir_se_layenge_Congress (will bring Congress again)," stated the Chief Minister on social media.

Speaking to media persons, CM Baghel said: "It (Durg) has always been the stronghold for Congress...They (BJP) haven't promised anything to the public of Chhattisgarh. They know that the public of Chhattisgarh is not going to trust their guarantees. Trust is bestowed upon Congress...and the (Congress) government's leader Bhupesh Baghel.

Before heading to file his nomination, he shared pictures on social media, capturing a personal moment at his Bhilai residence. The images showed his wife applying a 'tilak' on his forehead. Baghel expressed gratitude for the love and support he has received from the people and vowed to remain dedicated to serving them.

"I always remember the day when I went to file a nomination for the first time. Today I have left from my Bhilai residence to file a nomination as a candidate from Patan. My wife Mukteshwari applied tilak like every time. Your love is my strength. For the self-respect of Chhattisgarhiya, I promise to always remain dedicated in serving you all," said the Chief Minister in his social media post.

Patan, the assembly constituency, is situated in a rural area and shares a border with the state capital, Raipur. Bhupesh Baghel has a strong connection with this constituency, having been elected five times from the seat in 1993, 1998, 2003, 2013, and 2018. In 2008, he faced a defeat in the assembly poll to BJP's Vijay Baghel, who also happens to be his nephew.

In the upcoming election, the opposition BJP in the state has fielded Vijay Baghel, who currently serves as the Lok Sabha member from Durg, as its candidate for the Patan assembly seat. Both the Chief Minister and the BJP candidate belong to the Kurmi community, an influential OBC group in the state, which holds a substantial presence in the constituency. The electoral battle for Patan is poised to be a closely watched contest, given the prominence of the candidates and the political dynamics in the region.
