Byelection 2023 Highlights: AAP MLA Arrested For Violating Model Code Of Conduct In Jalandhar

Background

Bypolls to four Assembly constituencies and one Parliamentary constituency across four states - Punjab, Odisha, UP and Meghalaya would be held today amid the polling for the crucial Karnataka election which saw high-octane campaigning by the BJP, Congress and the JD(S). Polling will take place on Wednesday from 8 am to 6 pm. The counting of votes will be held on May 13. Here are the details about the bypolls which will be held today.

JALANDHAR

The Punjab government has declared a local holiday today in government offices, boards, corporations and educational institutions in the wake of the bypoll. The holiday was declared under the Negotiable Instrument Act 1881. The seat had fallen vacant following the death of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary

JAHRSUGUDA

The high-decibel campaign for the May 10 bypoll in Odisha's Jharsuguda assembly seat ended at 6 pm on Monday, officials said. Campaigning was intense as this is the last poll before the general elections next year. As many as 2,21,070 people are eligible to exercise their franchise in 253 booths. Voters comprise 1,10,320 men, 1,10,687 women and 63 of the third gender.

SWAR AND CHHANBEY

The by-election to Swar and Chhanbey Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh will witness a direct contest between the ruling coalition and the opposition Samajwadi Party with the victor getting a moral boost before next year's Lok Sabha polls. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to sit out the by-elections, the Congress has fielded its candidate only in Chhanbey and the political leaders are either campaigning in Karnataka or busy with the urban local bodies elections of Uttar Pradesh. The focus of the bypolls, however, will be on Swar which was previously represented by Abdullah Azam Khan, the son of senior SP leader Azam Khan. The Swar assembly seat was declared vacant on February 13 after a Moradabad court sentenced Abdullah Azam Khan to two years in jail in a 15-year-old case.

SOHIONG

The campaign for the by-election for the Sohiong assembly seat, which saw bitter political attacks between two constituents of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, ended on Monday. There are six candidates in the by-poll with the NPP and the United Democratic Party (UDP), coalition partners of the MDA, seeking to win the seat. The two parties could not reach an understanding for the byelection.
