Background
Bypolls to four Assembly constituencies and one Parliamentary constituency across four states - Punjab, Odisha, UP and Meghalaya would be held today amid the polling for the crucial Karnataka election which saw high-octane campaigning by the BJP, Congress and the JD(S). Polling will take place on Wednesday from 8 am to 6 pm. The counting of votes will be held on May 13. Here are the details about the bypolls which will be held today.
JALANDHAR
The Punjab government has declared a local holiday today in government offices, boards, corporations and educational institutions in the wake of the bypoll. The holiday was declared under the Negotiable Instrument Act 1881. The seat had fallen vacant following the death of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary
JAHRSUGUDA
The high-decibel campaign for the May 10 bypoll in Odisha's Jharsuguda assembly seat ended at 6 pm on Monday, officials said. Campaigning was intense as this is the last poll before the general elections next year. As many as 2,21,070 people are eligible to exercise their franchise in 253 booths. Voters comprise 1,10,320 men, 1,10,687 women and 63 of the third gender.
SWAR AND CHHANBEY
The by-election to Swar and Chhanbey Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh will witness a direct contest between the ruling coalition and the opposition Samajwadi Party with the victor getting a moral boost before next year's Lok Sabha polls. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to sit out the by-elections, the Congress has fielded its candidate only in Chhanbey and the political leaders are either campaigning in Karnataka or busy with the urban local bodies elections of Uttar Pradesh. The focus of the bypolls, however, will be on Swar which was previously represented by Abdullah Azam Khan, the son of senior SP leader Azam Khan. The Swar assembly seat was declared vacant on February 13 after a Moradabad court sentenced Abdullah Azam Khan to two years in jail in a 15-year-old case.
SOHIONG
The campaign for the by-election for the Sohiong assembly seat, which saw bitter political attacks between two constituents of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, ended on Monday. There are six candidates in the by-poll with the NPP and the United Democratic Party (UDP), coalition partners of the MDA, seeking to win the seat. The two parties could not reach an understanding for the byelection.

Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Baba Bakala in Amritsar Dalbir Singh Tong was arrested in Jalandhar on Wednesday for allegedly violating the model code of conduct and later released on bail, said Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C, according to PTI.
According to the model code of conduct, no person from outside the polling constituency can remain in the area after the campaign period is over without the permission of the Election Commission or a valid reason.

According to the latest data Jharsuguda assembly seat in Odisha saw a voter turnout of 55.20% till 3 pm.
UP Bypolls: Over 33% Voter Turnout Recorded In UP's Suar Till 3 PM
Suar in UP recorded 33.66% voter turnout in bypolls till 3 pm. While Chhanbey saw a voter turnout of 32.64%
Odisha Bypoll: 41.26% Voter Turnout Recorded In Jharsuguda Till 1 PM
As per the latest data, 41.26% voter turnout was recorded in the voting for the by-election to the Jharsuguda Assembly seat in Odisha till 1 pm.
Punjab Bypolls: 29.5% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 1 PM
Till 1 pm, 29.5% of polling was recorded in the bypoll to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat.
