Nitish Govt Likely To Announce Free Electricity Up To 100 Units Ahead of Bihar Polls

Bihar Elections: Approved by the Finance Department, the proposal awaits Cabinet clearance.

Bihar Elections: The Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar could soon offer a major relief to residents ahead of the state assembly elections. According to sources, the government is working on a plan to provide up to 100 units of electricity free of charge. The proposal, prepared by the Energy Department, has already received approval from the Finance Department. It is now likely to be presented before the Cabinet for final clearance. Once approved, the scheme will be implemented across Bihar.

Charges to Apply Beyond 100 Units

This move is expected to directly ease the financial burden on common households and help them save money. The benefit will be available exclusively to domestic consumers. Under the proposed scheme, families consuming up to 100 units of electricity per month will not have to pay any electricity bill. However, those using more than 100 units will have to pay charges for the additional consumption.

Only electricity usage beyond the 100-unit threshold will incur costs for consumers. Details of the benefits for domestic users will be made public only after the Cabinet’s approval. The Nitish government’s initiative is likely to particularly benefit lower- and middle-income families, for whom electricity bills represent a significant monthly expense.

A Strategic Move Ahead of Elections

Currently, under the Kutir Jyoti Yojana in rural areas, electricity is provided at ₹1.97 per unit for beneficiaries and ₹2.52 per unit for other domestic consumers. In urban areas, the rate stands at ₹7.57 per unit, but government subsidies reduce it to ₹4.52 per unit. With elections approaching, the NDA government appears to be making a significant political bet with this proposal. However, only time will tell how much electoral advantage this move will yield.
