Background

Purnia: In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Santosh Kumar from Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) won the elections by a margin of 116669 votes. The polling / voting in Purnia constituency in the 2019 General elections took place in Phase 2 on 18 April. The major contest is between Janata Dal (United)#s Santosh Kumar Kushwaha and Congress Party#s Uday singh @ pappu singh

Purnia 2014 Lok Sabha Polls

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party won 22 out of the 40 parliamentary seat with 29.4 percent vote share while the Lok Janshakti Party managed to win just 6 seats with a 6.4 percent vote share.

Voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Purnia Lok Sabha Lok Sabha constituency. The total voter turnout was 64.29% Lok Sabha percent with 61.36% Lok Sabha percent male voters turning out to cast their votes. Meanwhile, 67.55% Lok Sabha percent of the women voters cast their votes and 11982 Lok Sabha voters pressed on the NOTA

Out of the 17 Lok Sabha candidates who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Purnia, 15 had to deposit their security. The voters gave their mandate in favour of Santosh Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) as he defeated Uday Singh Alias Pappu Singh by a margin of 116669 votes.

  • 2004 Lok Sabha Elections: In 14th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defeated LJNSP candidate with a difference of 12883 votes. Here, Bharatiya Janta Party leader Uday Singh attained 244426 votes and LJNSP candidate Rajesh Ranjan Alias Pappu Yadav bagged 231543 votes
  • 1999 Lok Sabha Elections: In 13th Lok Sabha election, Independent candidate defated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate in one-sided contest. Here, IND candidate Rajesh Ranjan attained 438193 votes and BJP's Jay Krishna Mandal bagged 185627 votes.
  • 1998 Lok Sabha Elections: In 12th Lok Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party candidate defeated Samajwadi Party candidate with a difference of 35817 votes. Here, Bharatiya Janta Party leader Jay Krishna Mandal attained 265096 votes and Samajwadi Party candidate Rajesh Ranjan bagged 229279 votes
  • 1996 Lok Sabha Elections: In 11th Lok Sabha election, Samajwadi Party candidate defated Bharatiya Janta Party candidate in one-sided contest. Here, SP candidate Rajesh Ranjan attained 443111 votes and BJP's Rajendra Pd. Gupta bagged 126956 votes.
  • 1989 Lok Sabha Elections: In Ninth Lok Sabha election, JD candidate had defeated Communist Party of India candidate by a margin of 54557 votes JD candidate Taslimudin had got 177159 while CPM got Ajit Sarkar votes.
  • 1984 Lok Sabha Elections: In 8th Lok Sabha poll, Indian National Congress candidate defated LKD candidate in one-sided contest. Here, INC candidate Madhuree Singh attained 294076 votes and LKD's Kamal Natha Jha bagged 103676 votes.
  • 1980 Lok Sabha Elections: In 7th Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate had defeated JNP(S) candidate by a margin of 61956 votes INC(I) candidate Madhuri Singh had got 163022 while JNP(S) got Niyanand Arya votes.
  • 1977 Lok Sabha Elections: In Sixth Lok Sabha election, BLD candidate had defeated INC candidate by a margin of 92037 votes BLD candidate Lakhan Lal Kapoor had got 199034 while INC got Madhuri Singh votes.
  • 1971 Lok Sabha Elections: In Fifth Lok Sabha election, Indian National Congress candidate defeated CPI candidate with a difference of 20164 votes. Here, Indian National Congress leader Mohammad Tahir attained 56977 votes and CPI candidate Z. A. Ahmad bagged 36813 votes
