Rajya Sabha Paves Way For Tribal Varsity In Telangana As It Clears Central Universities Bill

The bill will now be moved to the honourable President of India for her assent following which, the bill shall be enforced as an act.

In the ongoing winter session of the parliament, the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday cleared the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Passed through a voice vote in the upper house, the bill aims at establishing the newly proposed Central Tribal University in Telangana. The new varsity is aimed at enhancing the higher education and research facilities primarily for the tribal population of India.

Earlier last week, the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha as well. The bill proposes to establish a new ‘Central Tribal University’ in Telangana. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha earlier following a reply to the debate by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The bill was moved for passage and consideration by Union Minister of State (MoS) for Education, Subhas Sarkar, as per a Live Law report.

After the passage of the bill in the Rajya Sabha, the bill will now be headed to the President of India for final assent. Once the bill receives the president’s assent, it would henceforth turn into an act. Notably, under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation act, 2014, which chalked out a separate Telangana state from the earlier Andhra Pradesh, a Central Tribal University in Telangana had been obligatory.

PM Modi further announced that the varsity will be built up with a budget of Rs 900 crore.

The new Tribal Varsity will look forward to serving as a hub for quality higher education and research in the region, especially for the tribal population. The new university shall cater advanced knowledge systems to the tribal population of the country by providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, culture and customs and advancement in technology.
