17 people, including eight candidates, were arrested for malpractices on the first day of the Bihar Police constable recruitment exam.

Patna: A total of 17 people, including eight candidates, were arrested for malpractices on the first day of the Bihar Police constable recruitment exam on Wednesday, according to an official statement.

"Eight candidates were arrested on Wednesday for fraudulent activities during the examination: four from Patna, and two each from Buxar and Jamui districts. Additionally, two candidates were expelled from the exam in Bhagalpur due to discrepancies in their documents," news agency PTI quoted Bihar Police as saying.

Notably, among the four arrested in Patna, two pairs had identical names and the same father's names.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend two more candidates involved in the malpractice.

The Central Selection Board of Constables (CSBC) is conducting the recruitment exam for constable positions in Bihar Police, Bihar Special Armed Police, and other units.

The exam, which began on Wednesday, is for over 21,391 vacancies and will continue until August 28. It will be conducted in a single shift on August 11, 18, 21, 25, and 28, with a total of 17.87 lakh candidates expected to participate.

Additionally, nine non-candidates were arrested for fraudulent activities: seven in Khagaria and two in Buxar. Police confiscated 71 fake question papers, 92 fake answer sheets, 145 admit cards, and 45 mobile phones from them. The materials are currently under further examination.

"Police seized 71 fake question papers, 92 fake answer sheets, 145 admit cards and 45 mobile phones from their possession. They are being further examined by the police," the statement said.

The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police has also identified at least 15 Telegram channels, three WhatsApp groups, and eight UPI IDs being used by fraudsters to lure parents with promises of increasing their children's marks to help them clear the exam.

"There is information that in certain cases funds have also been transferred to the fraudsters... it is being verified. Besides, EOU officials are also collecting details about certain mobile numbers that are being used by the fraudsters," it added.
