The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has added a chapter on the National War Memorial as Class 7 textbooks. The Ministry of Defence announced the inclusion of the chapter named ‘A Homage To Our Brave Soldiers,’ in the NCERT Class 7 curriculum, through an official press release on August 28, 2023. Underling the history, significance and importance of the National War Memorial, the introduction of the new chapter is aimed at encouraging youth participation in nation building by inculcating the ideas and values of patriotism, devotion to duty, and sacrifice and courage among young children, stated the press release.

“The chapter highlights the history, significance, and concept of the National War Memorial (NWM), in addition to the supreme sacrifice made by the bravehearts of the Armed Forces in the service of the nation post-independence,” reads the official press release.

"This should have happened long ago. It is a matter of surprise why it wasn't done before. It is being taught since March this year when the textbook was released," NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani said while speaking to ANI on the inclusion of the new chapter: ‘A Homage to our Brave Soldiers’ in NCERT textbooks.

"NCERT is making efforts to bring new books in the coming year. All this is being done with the aim of telling students about how India carried out Covid management, the G20 summit, the Chandrayaan mission etc and furthering students' critical thinking, logical mindset and research orientation," Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on the addition of the new chapter on the National War Memorial in NCERT textbooks.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National War Memorial on February 25, 2019. Besides promoting a sense of sacrifice and national spirit among the people of the country, the memorial was set-up as tribute to the brave soldiers of the country who sacrificed their lives defending the nation.
