Kanjhawala Hit-And-Run: 1 Year On, Anjali's Mother Recalls Fateful Night, Says Her Death 'Still Haunts Me'

One year since the Kanjhawala Hit-And-Run case, Anjali's grief-stricken mother recalled the harrowing moments leading up to when she received a call informing her about her daughter's death.

In a heart-wrenching incident last New Year's Eve, 20-year-old Anjali Singh met with a tragic end when she was struck by a car and dragged for several kilometres in northwest Delhi. The incident unfolded as Anjali, riding her scooter, became a victim of a hit-and-run, leaving her family shattered and bereaved. Speaking to news agency PTI, Rekha, Anjali's grief-stricken mother and resident of Mangolpuri, recalled the harrowing moments leading up to the dreadful news.

"We were waiting for Anjali to return home so that we could begin the new year by offering prayers at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara," she recounted. "Little did we know that we would get a call from the police that night about her death," she told PTI.

Rekha vividly recalled the impact of the tragedy, "I still remember those images of her death, which still haunts me and will haunt every single family member."

"Her death has left a void that nobody can fill," lamented Varun, Anjali's 12-year-old brother.

Anjali, the sole breadwinner for her family, earned around Rs 25,000 per month. Rekha, currently unemployed, expressed the hope that the government would extend support in securing employment. "A portion of the money we had received through help after Anjali’s death was used for my treatment, while some portion has been kept as fixed deposits in the name of three children," Rekha told PTI over a phone call.

Anjali's tragic end was compounded by the gruesome details revealed in her post-mortem report, citing shock and haemorrhage resulting from multiple injuries. More than 40 injuries were found on her body, as reported by PTI.

In a plea to those celebrating the New Year, Rekha urged caution, particularly for those who consume alcohol. "I want to tell those who go out to party and celebrate New Year that they must be very careful as people forget how to drive after having drinks," she said.

Anjali's family donated her belongings at Ganga Ghat near Badaun, where they also performed her last rites.

The accused, Amit Khanna, Krishan, Mithun, Manoj Mittal, Deepak Khanna, Ankush Khanna, and Ashutosh Bharadwaj, face charges ranging from murder to criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and harbouring offenders. A total of 117 witnesses were examined during the investigation, PTI's report stated.

According to a senior police officer cited by PTI, the accused have been booked for criminal conspiracy under Section 120-B of the IPC, destruction of evidence under Section 201, and harbouring offenders under Section 212.
