Tripura: 2 Men Arrested For 'Tying Their Mother To Tree, Burning Her Alive Over Family Dispute'

The incident occurred on Saturday night at Khamarbari in the Champaknagar police station area. The woman had been living with the two sons since her husband died about a year and a half ago.

It is likely the sons took this step following a family dispute, as per the police.

A 62-year-old woman was allegedly tied to a tree and burnt alive by her two sons in West Tripura on Saturday night. According to PTI, the sons have been arrested, with police suspicious that a family dispute may have been the motive.

The incident occurred on Saturday night at Khamarbari in the Champaknagar police station area. The woman had been living with the two sons since her husband died about a year and a half ago. A third son lives in Agartala. 

The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jirania, Kamal Krishna Koloi, was quoted as saying by PTI that a team rushed to the spot once the police received information that a woman had been set on fire. When they reached the site, however, they found a burnt body tied to a tree. The body of the deceased was then taken to hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Koloi added that the two sons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the case. He said the two would be presented to the court on Monday, for the police to seek remand for interrogation. “A family dispute may be the reason behind the incident," he said. 

Koloi added that further investigation was underway.

Woman Beaten To Death By Son In UP

In a similar incident, a woman, 65, was beaten to death by her son inside their house at Karbala Mohalla, Firozabad, on Saturday. According to a report in The Times Of India (TOI), Rajesh alias Raju, 32, locked the main door of the house to prevent anyone from entering during the assault. The neighbours said they heard the screams of the victim, Ramkali, and when they finally managed to break open the door, Raju had fled the spot, leaving the elderly woman in a critical condition.

The victim was rushed to the district hospital, but was declared dead, as per TOI. 

The police said the accused was mentally ill. Based on the preliminary investigation, an argument over money had led to the incident. The mother and son lived together. “The post-mortem examination report is awaited, and the entire matter is being investigated in detail,” SHO Yogendrapal Singh told TOI.
