A Sikh priest was attacked with sharp-edged weapons and his leg was chopped off in Punjab's Tarn Taran district, a police official said on Friday. The priest is identified as 32-year-old Sukhchain Singh.

He was attacked last night in Khadoor Sahib town and the attackers managed to escape after the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police Gurmit Chohan said, as per news agency PTI.

The priest was admitted to a hospital and two surgeries were done. He is now out of danger, the senior police official informed.

The priest was employed at a gurdwara in Bannia village.

"His leg was chopped off brutally, besides deep cuts were inflicted on his hand's finger. His leg which the miscreants chopped off was not found around," the SSP said.

He further informed that the Police have registered a case based on the statement of his family and assured the culprits will be arrested soon

"Few unidentified assailants chopped off the leg of a 'granthi' (Sikh priest). The criminals took away the chopped leg with them. The attackers escaped after the incident. The victim is currently under medical treatment in Amritsar. We will take the investigation forward based on the victim's statement," news agency ANI reported the Police as saying.

According to the preliminary investigation, the reason behind the incident could be personal animosity but it was yet to be verified, a report by the Times of India stated SSP Gurmit Chohan as saying.

As per the report, the granthi had joined the gurdwara about six months back. The police are trying to procure the CCTV footage of the incident, the report mentioned citing sources.
