Shraddha Murder, Kerala Human Sacrifice, Rajasthan Triple Suicide: Crimes That Shook India In 2022

As this year draws to a close, here's a list of criminal cases that sent shivers down our spine.

The year 2022 has been a mix of good and bad. While the relief from the Covid pandemic and life limping back to normal gave us much to be thankful for, this year also saw a high number of bone-chilling crime cases. Even as the Aftab-Shraddha case remains fresh in our memories, there are other cases that were equally gruesome and dark. Here's a list of such cases that would give even crime thrillers on OTT platforms a run for their money.

 

Aftab-Shraddha Murder Case

A relationship between two urban youngsters went wrong, and how. The crime unfolded when a worried father finally registered a complaint about his missing daughter who had left home to stay with her boyfriend, only to find out that his daughter was murdered, chopped into pieces, and disposed of in Delhi's Mehrauli forest. The case got darker with every passing day as details unravelled one after another. According to the police, accused Aftab Poonawalla said he killed Shraddha Walker in the heat of the moment and then chopped her body into pieces and stored them in a 300-litre fridge he bought for the purpose. Every night he would allegedly go out with the pieces of Shraddha's body in his bag, to dispose them of. This carried on over several days. In the meantime, Aftab allegedly also saw other women, and brought them home, even when Shraddha's body parts lay in his fridge. The crime shook India and opened up a conversation about online dating as the couple had met through an online dating app. The case is currently being investigated by the Delhi Police. Aftab's narco and polygraph tests have been conducted to find the truth. Shraddha's father Vikas Walkar has demanded the death penalty for Aftab.

Kerala Human Sacrifice

This one is straight out of the movies because, in 2022, it seems unbelievable in real life. The crime took place in the state with the highest literacy rate. A couple wanted to get rich, and they had to do something to achieve their goal, and they did -- murdered two women, chopped their bodies, and consumed human flesh, as claimed by the police. The chopped body parts of the victims were found buried at Elantoor village in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district. Prime accused Mohammed Shafi allegedly lured victims Roslyn and Padma to the residence of Bhagval Singh and Laila where they brutally killed them in two separate incidents. Knives were inserted in their private parts and their breasts were allegedly chopped and kept aside. This macabre case was one of the most spine-chilling crimes that took place in the year. The case is currently being investigated.

Sidhu Moose Wala Murder

On May 29, Punjabi star singer Sidhu Moose Wala was shot dead in Punjab's Mansa district. This was a day after his security was downgraded by the new AAP-led Punjab government. At around 5:30 pm, when Moose Wala was driving along with his cousins to Jawaharke village in Mansa, his SUV was intercepted by two vehicles, and 30 rounds of bullets were fired. Moose Wala was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The Laurence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the attack. Investigation revealed how a gangster planned the plot to murder the popular singer from Tihar jail along with another Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, according to the police. The murder was traced to an old rivalry between gangs. The case opened the conversation around Punjab's deadly gang rivalries. The news of Moose wala being shot dead devasted many of his fans around the world. Recently, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann confirmed that Brar was detained in the US.

Rajasthan Triple Suicide Over Domestic Abuse

"It is better to die once than to die every single day." That's what Mamta wrote in her WhatsApp status a day before she allegedly died by suicide along with her two other sisters, Kalu and Kamlesh. Mamta and Kamlesh were heavily pregnant at the time of the death, and Kalu had delivered barely a month back. The sisters were all married to men of the same family in Rajasthan and were victims of domestic abuse. Their bodies, along with the bodies of two children, were found in a well in the Dudu town of Jaipur. The two children aged four years and another barely a month old were Kalu's children. The sisters wanted to make a living by studying further and were allegedly abused by acholic husbands. Family members of the victims shared screenshots of them holding their in-laws responsible for their deaths. It was reported that they were tortured by their in-laws. It also came to the fore that the three were married off as children in 2003. Police also suspected a dowry angle behind the murders.

Murder Of Daughter Of Family Honour

The second week into November, the body of a girl was found stuffed into a suitcase near the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura. The police arrested the parents of the girl suspecting it to be a case of honour killing. Reportedly, the family of the girl was not happy with her marriage without their approval. Police said the victim had a fight with her father on November 17, and enraged by this he shot her twice. The same night they packed her body in a suitcase and threw it on the Yamuna Expressway, The parents have been booked for murder and arrested. The police said while the mother may not have shot her, she was involved in disposing of the body and helping the father. They claimed that the accused were identified when they recovered the suitcase with the body, scanned CCTV footage, traced calls, and put up posters of the woman on social media to identify her.
