Constable Shoots Dead Sub-Inspector After 'Verbal Spat' In Manipur's Jiribam

Sub-inspector Shah Jahan was shot dead from point-blank range allegedly by Constable Bikramjit Singh in the Mongbung area of the district.

A police constable allegedly fatally shot his senior, a Sub-Inspector, with his service rifle after a verbal spat over some issue in Manipur's Jiribam district on Saturday. The accused constable was immediately arrested by the other policemen.

Sub-inspector Shah Jahan was shot dead from point-blank range allegedly by Constable Bikramjit Singh in the Mongbung area of the district. The area is currently under heightened security due to ongoing violence in the region. The reasons which led to the shooting remain unclear, authorities are currently investigating the motives behind this fatal act.

As per an IANS report, Sub-inspector Shah Jahan was a resident of Yaripok Tulihal in Thoubal district and posted at Mongbung village police post under Jiribam police station. The accused police constable was of Naharup Pangong Makhong in Imphal East district.

According to an India Today report, a case of murder has been registered against the accused Bikramjit Singh and the police have launched an investigation into the matter

As per the report, police are conducting a thorough investigation as senior officials from the Jiribam police station arrived at the scene. Meanwhile, the accused constable will be interrogated to ascertain the facts surrounding the shooting and take appropriate action. 

A large number of Manipur Police personnel have been stationed in Mongbung village, to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of the residents amid escalating tensions in the district. The mixed-populated Jiribam district, adjoining southern Assam, has witnessed several incidents of violence this year. As per IANS, the district has remained peaceful since the ethnic violence erupted in several districts of the northeastern state in May last year.

In a separate incident, 29-year-old personnel of the 3rd Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) was found dead in the barracks in Kakching district, on Friday around 3 PM.

According to the Hindustan Times report, the deceased was identified as Thangjam Suresh and was found dead on his bed. The cause of death is yet to be determined. As per the district police, his body had been sent for post-mortem to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Porompat, Imphal East.
