6-Storey Under-Construction Building Collapses in Telangana, 2 Feared Trapped

A six-storey building collapsed in Bhadrachalam, Telangana, trapping at least two people under the debris. Rescue teams, including SDRF and NDRF, are working to save victims.

At least two people were feared to be trapped under the debris of a six-storey building which collapsed in Bhadrachalam, Bhadradri Kothagudem district in Telangana, on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the Super Bazar centre area of the temple town in Bhadradri Kothagudem district at 2:30 pm. Police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation along with other departments to investigate and plan out the rescue operations.

It was immediately not clear as to how many people might be trapped under the rubble. Area residents believe that about six people may be trapped inside.

Speaking to ANI, Bhadrachalam ASP Vikrant Kumar Singh said, "At around 2:30 pm, a six-storeyed under-construction building collapsed. Two people are feared trapped. As soon as we received the information, we immediately rushed to the spot. We immediately contacted the SDRF, NDRF, and other teams," he said.

He mentioned that a woman’s voice could be heard from under the debris. “We are sure she will be rescued soon. Rescue operation will go on till the time we rescue all the trapped persons and until all the debris is cleared," he added.

According to IANS, the police, local fire services, revenue and panchayat raj departments were participating in the rescue operation. Officials were mobilising cranes and other heavy machinery to remove the debris.

Municipal Authorities Issued Notice To Halt Construction

The builder had reportedly added five floors to an old structure where residents were already living. Officials suspect that a design flaw and poor construction quality caused the incident.

Additionally, the owner was constructing a temple next to the building and had collected donations under the guise of a trust. Allegations have surfaced that the building's construction was undertaken without proper authorisation from the relevant authorities.

As per the IANS report, locals claimed that municipal authorities had issued notices to the owner, instructing him to halt the construction. However, despite repeated complaints, no significant action was taken, ultimately leading to the tragedy. They also alleged that whenever officials warned the owner, he would temporarily pause construction but would resume it after a few days.

Bhadradri Kothagudem District Collector Jitesh V. Patil and Superintendent of Police Rohit Raj were closely monitoring the ongoing rescue operation.
